i hate how good heated rivalry is because the fandom is a cesspit

heated rivalry discourse pertaining towards russia/how its portrayed is so funny to me. 99% of the arguments i’ve seen go something along the lines of "oh its normalizing russia’s existence"

and like. yeah. one of the characters is in fact Russian, and we get maybe two episodes where that factors in geographically (so far i’ve only hit EP2). but it gets to a point where i have to wonder if we watched the same show LMAO

like. my guy. in the contexts where russia is mentioned, it’s never portrayed positively? in the second episode (after ilya’s lost at the Sochi Olympics, as captain of team russia), the entirety of the scene filmed in Russia isn’t a positive one. he’s miserable pretty much the entire time: between losing the chance to compete in finals, being berated by his dad for losing said match, having to turn away shane to keep from getting outed, and getting hit on by sascha (implied as some sort of ex) when he’s uncomfortable with it due to shane, it’s kind of obvious that part of him is bringing him nothing but grief or irritation. i don’t know where certain parts of the fandom became convinced that it’s glorifying Russia at all. I’d actually argue the opposite, because there’s not a moment where the russian parts of his upbringing and heritage don’t clash with who ilya is (especially post-Shane)
