German Shame Masks

Shame masks were a German form of punishment used in the 17th and 18th centuries. People were forced to wear them for merely violating trivial social rules, such as gossiping or telling dirty jokes. While the heavy, iron mask was certainly tortuous, the main point of the practice was to humiliate the offender as much as possible.
