A wave of revelations about investors mistreating female entrepreneurs has spurred the resignation of a prominent venture capitalist and calls for change.
“Some men have the feeling that the conversation has turned into a witch hunt,” said Aileen Lee, a founder of Cowboy Ventures. “They’re asking when people will stop being outed.”
-- This quote really riles me up. How ignorant! It will stop when these men stop abusing their power!

I've been asked, Where are all the Women in Tech?
45% of computer science women graduates do not make it past 5 years of industry work. FIVE YEARS.... Today, I read that at a Drupal conference, they included a copy of Playboy magazines in all the attendees welcome packs. What happened to being professional? By doing this they broke their own code of conduct, which was put in place to make attendees feel safe. Which is truly disheartening.

This is a great story on diversity. It's not an easy search, but great women candidates are out there. Kudos to Heiferman and the Meetup team for rising to the challenge.

Beyond the Code 2015 - Powered by Shopify
Hey folks!
As the school season descends upon us, and midterms loom on the horizon, there is still one bright spot on my calendar. September 21st is Beyond the Code!
Beyond the Code is a one day, Shopify-hosted conference that aims to broaden the view of the tech industry by showcasing minority groups in tech and talking about topics both within and beyond the code. Geared towards those in technology, business or both, attendees will have an opportunity to listen to speakers in the industry and learn hands on skills in a variety of workshops.
Women today are still underrepresented in numbers in the “fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with the exception of life sciences (though not when it comes to higher-tier positions). Only 9% of USA top technology executives are female, and in Canada women represent only 11% of registered professional engineers" (http://www.scwist.ca/tag/stem/). At Beyond the Code, we’d like to start a dialogue to address the ways we can change those numbers, and hear from some women who are performing at the highest level in their respective fields. We want to bring together the best minds in computing and increase visibility for the contributions of women to computing.
Why you should be there:
You’ll meet peers and mentors with diverse backgrounds and experience
You’ll build new connections and relationships that can support you throughout your career
You’ll learn new skills in our hands-on workshops
You’ll hear some of our industry’s brightest talk about how they’ve made positive changes to their communities (like Hilary Mason, Jen Myers, and more!)
Who should show up? Anyone interested in diversity and technology. You should also join us if you’re:
Interested in the tech industry: you’ll make new connections and learn how to navigate potential workplace challenges.
Just getting started: you’ll attend hands-on workshops designed for early career tech professionals, and meet new peers and mentors.
An experienced technologist: you’ll hear expert advice on managing the unique challenges of established careers.
The nitty gritty:
Where: The Shaw Centre in Ottawa (55 Colonel By Drive) When: September 21, 2015 from 9:00am-5:00pm Tickets: Buy them here! Use the discount code LMS-BTC10 to get 10% off your ticket if you buy before Friday, September 18th!
For more info, head to http://beyondthecode.io/.
It’s going to be an awesome day! Hope to see you all there :)

Amazon isn’t the only company burning out their employees with unsustainable expectations. Let’s break the cycle.
This post by Dustin Moskovitz resonates loudly. Early in my career I thought I had to Step Up and log an unreasonable amount of hours of work. It worked for a short period of time, but after a while my long work hours and poor eating habits caught up with me. My work and health began to degrade. I hit the wall of recovery. I stopped bouncing back after an intense period of coding. I think the hardest part about changing the way I worked was resetting the expectations of the people I worked for and with... and I lay that cross on myself, not them. I had to change my environment completely before I felt comfortable changing my work habits.
I still have to remind myself that a fresh, rested mind is much more productive.

Lots of stats are quoted in this article. Highly recommend reading this post by Rachel Thomas.
Research shows the many benefits of taking notes by hand.
When I bring my laptop to conference sessions, I focus too much on transcribing than truly listening to the Speaker. The last conference I attended, I closed my laptop and just listened - jotting down notes in a notebook. In the end it I felt that I absorbed more information than if I had used my laptop.

Random test data generator is something I could have used years ago. Need test data? This looks like a good place to start.

"I hate walking around the halls of the Gates Computer Science Building...It’s because inevitably, whenever I walk into Gates, I always get hit with the four words every non-tech minority thinks whenever they see an unfamiliar minority in a tech space: 'Hey, are you lost?'"
"Hey, are you lost?"
The reality of minorities in tech is that they must be "lost". These types of reactions begin in the education system and continue into the industry :(

Good luck to Maria Renz.
It’s time we take a temperature check of diversity efforts in tech and recognize that only certain voices are being heard above the rest.
