About to drop an earth shattering fact on y'all. Unless it was already talked about back in the day I can't remember. Technically yes but there's another ✨layer✨ to it.

Okay, so I live in Japan which means I have access to Japanese Netflix. WHICH MEANS I can watch vld in Japanese dub or switch to Japanese subs.

We already know that Keith actually says 愛してる to Shiro which is like the strongest, most rare way to say I love you in Japanese. He says this in the Japanese dub.

Now, what's interesting, is when I switched to just Japanese subtitles. In the sub, they translate it as 心から愛してる y'all when my jaw dropped!! DROPPED!

He basically said "I love you from the bottom of my heart"

I'm literally sobbing holy fucking shit???

It's 2024 and I'm still not over them

Anyways somehow I went down the Kuron rabbit hole and felt that type of sheith pain. Like he still loved Keith. He had no idea he was going to betray them all. He thought he was real, and he knew something was off but had no way to stop it. And he was the one to, even if for a moment, snap out of the brainwashing when Keith said he loved him.

And even fighting amongst all those clones, when it was so apparent that the Shiro standing in front of him likely wasn’t the original Shiro. Even if he had been acting a little odd before the betrayal. And despite this Shiro fighting him, Keith still said he loved him.

These bitches were soooooo in love. In a heart breaking and tragic love. Literally till the very end.

Keith looked at Shiro Like This during what he’d think were his last moments alive, as they both fell to their death.

my biggest/most controversial conspiracy theory about vld is that they planned on keith and shiro getting together the end but whimped out and that’s how we got that bullshit final season and all the writing choices

listen! sending keith to that planet where he got aged up up, keith and shiro’s meeting during shiro’s coma, the constant “you saved me/found me” black paladin episode where keith gets his scar from fighting shiro, refusing to give up on e/o, etc etc

I do think Voltron happened in a weird time period where, during the writing process there wasn’t really much queer representation in children’s media. (As well as, how much of that rep was deep and complex and focused heavily on the relationship between the m/m or f/f ships? Vs just an implication that two characters got together?) So Execs would be hesitant to make that big step to have a queer relationship, there’s a market of homophobic viewers (and straight up counties) they’d loss. It’s too risky.

Then as Voltron came out representation was getting a bit better, both in cartoons and just in society in general (rainbow capitalism and stuff, they’re profiting from us but at least they’re including us ya know.) So maybe Execs could live with a character being implied to possibly be gay in some kind of way. And there was groundwork for Shiro to be revealed as gay rep, if they ever decided to go that route. It could be a possibility.

And the fans wanted queer representation. And eventually the higher ups were ok with a male character saying to another gay man “You’re like a brother to me. I love you.” In the most gut wrenching voice that made the actual VA cry while recording. A younger generation didn’t grow up with the necessity to add subtext to queer relationships. In more recent years characters were just queer. So they’ve got no idea of the “no homo bro” trope. Why would they need to? Ironically enough the “You’re like a brother to me” line was probably meant to add deniability to the gay allegations to keep a broader audience. But the people who were the most loud about championing Queer Representation saw that and went No They Are Not Gay.
