Donations to fight Ebola are lower than expected. One psychologist thinks the reason may be the impact of hopelessness. A really big problem makes them less likely to give.
Something to consider...
As the World Plenipotentiary, I am contemplative and deliberate. My beliefs are sacred, but I am also not afraid to make the hard decisions, and do what needs to be done in time of crisis. Find out what kind of doer you are.

Starting this month Verizon FiOS customers can get upload speeds every bit as fast as their download speeds. Since that means faster, easier sharing of high-res illustrations, designs, and photos, FiOS is sponsoring a series of posts on Colossal to help us commission and share these super hi-res ani
Reminder about Bio and Time project:
Remember, the bio is one method to help you find inspiration for art making. You are not required to use a personal touchpoint. This is an option for the Time project or any future project.
Project 2: Time/video
Project 2: due week of 9/16, 9/17
TIME is the theme of the second project. Place is closely related to Time and should be considered.
Media required is video or stop animation, must be silent. About Time How do artists evoke and transform time in their work?
Can a work of contemporary art be timeless?
How does contemporary art relate to art of the ancient past, to nature, and to the rhythms of the life?
Time can be linear, cyclial, can evolve...
Representations of Time = watch for cliche
Look at sequential art, narrative, multi episode (David Salle)
Art objects can embody time (see artist Whitfield Lovell)
Changing views of time (Kara Walker, fact as fiction)
Structure of Time can be fractured, real time, change the rhythm of time, time can be endless...
Over the weekend -
Look at Art 21 Time/Stories/Place for ideas. Artists in bold are required viewing/commenting on blog. How does their work relate to Time and Place?
Time - Martin Puryear
Stories - Kara Walker
Place - Sally Mann
READ: Sourcing Info, William Kentridge, post to blog, ask three questions, bring to class for discussion
________________________________________________________________
Brainstorm - over the weekend
A.) From your bio, pick 5 important moments, can you make a film about one of these? All of these? How can you show the past? Should you refer to the present? B.) List favorite films, animations. What impressed you about the films structure? How did the story unfold? Can you use any of this to inform your work?
Tu 9/9 Faculty Art Opening in Rowe Tuesday night 5-7pm.
9/9 Tu - Reading due to blog on Chap 2 Sourcing Info and artist William Kentridge, view his work in Art 21. 3 Ideas for storyboards due in class (attempt to map out your idea), small group discussion, review of faculty show
W9/10, TH9/11 - 3 Ideas for storyboards due in class (attempt to map out your idea), small group discussion, review of faculty show
M 9/15 - Reading due to blog on Chap 2 Sourcing Info and artist William Kentridge, view his work in Art 21. 3 Ideas for storyboards due in class (attempt to map out your idea), small group discussion
Tu, W 9/16. 9/17 - Critique of group, 1 minute for video, 2 minute for power point presentations
Critique on TIME/PLACE
1. Videos shown first with no sound, do not explain your project
2. Your Power point presentation goes second. This should be brief, 5 slides. Keep format neutral, do not use the templates on Power Point, or create an original one. Your presentation should introduce the class to your ideas for the project. Show us the research you did, the artists/films/outside sources that may have influenced your approach. Do not show us clips of films, but you can show us a still frame image. Reveal any other information we need to know about your project (choice of place, pace of film, use of color or black and white). End with three questions you wish to ask your viewers after seeing your film.
Response after Play Critique -
1.) Please post final image of your project. The final image should be in focus, make adjustments if needed, crop, color correct, etc. You should always keep a high resolution image (300 ppi) for your personal files as well as a use a lower res image for your blog. This link below may be helpful when using your phone camera.
http://lifehacker.com/5662812/how-to-take-better-pictures-with-your-smartphones-camera
2.) Please write a self reflection on critique. You should discuss your work and how you feel it was received. You may also comment on your peers work as well.
3.) Please write comments to each classmate from your small group. Please post these comments in your blog and email/post to them directly. This can be informal but must be honest. Answer the following -
a.) What do you interpret from the artwork displayed?
b.) Was the piece successful in revealing the theme of play?
c.) Is the piece ambitious?
d.) How could the artwork improve (display, documentation...)?
For my TR section, please complete this by TH 9/4
For my MW section, please complete by this F 9/5
Thank you!
CONCEPTS - For next class (T 9/2 or W 9/3)
Project 1 is due. Bring your piece you wish to present to the class. Bring actual objects/evidence of your piece for display. Consider if you will use table, floor, wall, ceiling to display work. Bring materials to display work (example, if you need tape or black cloth, bring it with your piece).Digital work can be displayed in Preview, Youtube or from your class blog. Be prepared to discuss your artistic intent.
Before class, you should post to your blog –
1. A written proposal of your artistic intent for this project. Please include choice of media, manipulation, display. Be able to back up why you have made these choices in relation to your theme of PLAY.
2. Identify the research you did to complete this project. State artistic influences, outside reading, anything that has helped inform your decision for this project. Some of this research my be from your person history. Please site all sources.
3. Document photos of process work. These should be documented in a focused, well lit manner. Take more than you need, then edit before you post to your blog.
4. Attempt to photograph your final piece. We will review this in class after critique. We will discuss what works, what does not.
Good luck!
