Familiarize and Analyze
You can either familiarize yourself with material or analyze it. To familiarize means simply to read, watch, or listen. To analyze means to engage with it thoroughly—take notes, reflect on it, jot down your thoughts, and discuss it with someone.
Simply familiarizing yourself with material doesn’t lead to acquiring knowledge. In such cases, any content becomes entertainment, regardless of whether it’s presented as professional or science-based.
I’ve often found myself coming across an amazing podcast or video on design or technology but skipping it because I didn’t have the time or energy to analyze it. The fear of missing out (FOMO) would hold me back.
But now, I’ve decided to watch it anyway. If, during the process, I realize the content is worth analyzing, I add it to my “To Review” playlist. After detailed review and note-taking in Notion, I move it to the “Reviewed” playlist.
It’s nearly impossible to fully grasp something on the first try anyway, so nothing is really lost Ҩ #thoughts
