Andrew Salgado (b.1982, Regina, Canada) has situated himself as one of the eminent emerging painters in both the UK and North America. He has been listed by Saatchi as “one to invest in today” (Sept 2013), lauded by esteemed critic Edward Lucie Smith as a “dazzlingly skillful advocate” for painting, and been endorsed by Tony Godfrey (author of Phaidon’s Painting Today) as an “exciting artist with a particular vision”.
My work explores concepts relating to the destruction and reconstruction of identity – a process that attempts to re-consider the conventions of figurative painting through a continued pursuit toward abstraction. The goal is to create paintings that engage with matters beyond what is immediately visible, quite often consciously and reflexively questioning the nature of painting itself and a politicization of identity as something deconstructed, created, and tangible (…)
