I'm a polish NB currently enrolled in college studying maths and physics, my interests include maths and physics (obviously), seals (the animals), philosophy, road signs, history of Kociewie (an ethnographic region in Poland) and also a bunch of other stuff that piques my interest from time to time.

As you would expect, my first language is polish, the second is english and I know a tiny itsy bit of spanish.

this verse by Stanisław Barańczak severely fucks with you when you speak both english and polish, because it (kinda) works in both languages.

Though I'm a native polish speaker, I had trouble with parsing it in polish, even if every single word in here is a common word in polish. Like, I had to wrack my brain, thought there's no way there's handle in polish, but there is, it just means trades. And lot much is flight of the flies.

I went to a primary school in a small town then next to my village, and I was going to highschool in a different city then the one in which I was going to primary school, and I'm going to college in an entirely different city now so whenever people ask where I'm from I have to first ask them if they know where the town in which i want to school was, if they don't know then I have to ask if then know the closest bigger city, and if they don't know that I have to tell them where it is in relation to the regional capital and then tell them that I went to highschool next to it so I guess yes

I do not agree with veganism as a moral standard. If it is your personal moral stance, that is fine. If you think humans eating meat is inherently immoral, I don’t want to deal with you, you’re hopeless. Vegan ideology behaves more like a sect of evangelical Christianity than a dietary choice.

It is not inherently better for the environment. That is the thing. When you begin trying to explain that local, sustainably sourced animal protein is better for the environment than imported plant proteins that are farmed 3,500 miles away using slave labor, they start tuning you out. Down is better for the environment than polyester stuffing, leather is better for the environment than pleather. We should work on making animal agricultural practices more sustainable instead of trying to shame everyone into eating plant products that are also farmed unethically and unsustainably.

This isn't true. Firstly, international shipping is actually quite eco-friendly, and we could work to make it even more sustainable. We could also farm without slave labor.

Beef for instance is inherently going to use a lot of land to produce feed and produce a lot of greenhouse gasses.

Finally, why not have the best of both worlds? Locally sourced sustainably produced plant proteins, and food in general. I'm not even against a few ethically kept chickens to eat what we consider waste and lay eggs. You create a false binary. Why are plant products unethical and unsustainable? I mean ultimately animals eat something so there's going to be plant products somewhere! If you want your food to be ethical and sustainable, you need to figure out ethical and sustainable plant farming.

The equivalent in mathematics is that you'll spend way less time coming up with solutions to the fun math puzzles you love than you think. You'll spend most of your time trying to write your solutions down in a way that is understandable to people without your exact brain. And oh if I do this, I need to define this first. And oh I need to use this very obvious lemma. So I need to write that down. And either prove it or find a source for it. Ugh.

I will not forget that time a professor was looking for a student employee to type things into latex for him that he was dictating, like yeah buddy, I'd love that too but no. None of us want to do that. Suffer like the rest of us.

my equivalent is that instead of finding inherent connections between logical constructs is that you will have to learn random ass inequalities that come out of nowhere and have no cool explanation to them except "first you apply Cauchy-Schwartz, then Hölder, jumble some terms around and apply the triangle inequality"

at what point in my math degree will they teach me the difference between theorems propositions and lemmas

I struggle with this myself. I have roughly started on the following patterns of usage: Theorem: A big narrative point. Lemma: Something we prove just to get to one or more theorems. Proposition: Something that needs to be pointed out in the interest of building intuition but can safely be forgotten about right away after. Corollary: Something that we got basically for free from a theorem. Criterion: A theorem or lemma with a strong iff feel. Remark: Something that is basically instantaneous from a definition but might need to be pointed out that it is worthwhile to take a moment to actually realise that it is instantaneous from the definition.
