separation cannot kill love, as you know, but it is an agony nonetheless — cupid and psyche
— all it was supposed to be was three days. three days of filming a ten minute music video. and somehow, beomgyu had already felt resurfacing feelings.
<<la douleur exquise masterlist>>
“what’s your favorite story..?” beomgyu questioned, a happy smile placed on his face, his ears all open to hear what his oh so pretty friend had to say.
“well.. i’m a big fan of cupid and psyche. but that has a lot more to do with my delusional romantic mindset more than the story itself.. have you ever read it.” you questioned.
that was your last ever conversation with beomgyu. a conversation that never quite left your mind. in just that single conversation, you told him everything. you confessed, in a literary manner. but. it still took you so much courage to admit. you wanted something serious with beomgyu. and there was no better way for you to explain it than to use cupid and psyche for your feelings. at the moment, you couldn’t help but recall the situation as you found yourself waiting for beomgyu. you quietly shivered a bit, standing in the cold, the taste of alcohol still slightly in your mouth. tonight had been about getting so wasted out of your mind that maybe you’d forget about it all, just so that you could wake up with a raging migraine and hate yourself for setting yourself up for failure. however, here you were, in the middle of the night, standing outside of hongjoong’s apartment complex. way too sober for your liking, considering what you were about to experience.
you took in the cold night air, hoping that it would help calm you down. although you couldn’t help but get gradually nervous, you felt your stomach fight with itself. unfortunately, you weren’t unfamiliar with this anxious feeling. you felt it sprouting everytime you were on set, working your way up as an actress was difficult as someone who was extremely introverted. that’s what made working with woo dohwan so easy. the man knew how to be so outgoing with you that you never needed to breath in for five seconds before going on set. he took you under his wing as you became his mentee. although you don’t find your project with him as a blessing anymore, due to the fact that it helped you gain your position in txt’s music video. one that had already come out about two weeks ago. you had practically finished your involvement with txt except for the occasional variety show that was interested in how you landed your role and how txt had released the song of the year.
you wrapped your scarf around your nose, hoping it would control the way you were freezing. due to your distraction, you grew unaware of the nearing footsteps. you didn’t know that he was already there, not until he called out your name. walking up to you with a small smile, the smile that nearly made you want to forget everything and forgive the attractive man standing in front of you. beomgyu hoped that this would be it. he wished that everything would be correct after the two of you spoke. he couldn’t help but recite his apology and thoughts on his way to you.
“hi, yn.” beomgyu cheerfully greeted, as he playfully shrugged his shoulders. he loved being here with you. feeling as though he was finally getting his second chance. this was it. he couldn’t fuck this up. no matter what. he needed you back in his life.
“hey.. so.. you wanted to talk, i’m ready to talk..” you spoke, a little quiver hidden in the depths of your voice.
“look yn.. i really didn’t mean to hurt you.. there was one thing that i really never wanted to happen.. i never wanted to lose you.. i’m sorry. i didn’t know that chasing my dreams would mean that i would lose you. i thought you knew i wanted to become an idol.” beomgyu apologized, looking at your expression, attempting to read what exactly was going on in your mind. but it was difficult. more now than ever. beomgyu wasn’t sure if it’s because he was struggling to think around you, his practiced speech out the window. or maybe. just maybe. your years of acting had paid off. you knew how to hide your anxieties well at this point, a few deep breaths and everything would be okay. or maybe it was both. maybe beomgyu just barely even recognized you anymore from your years apart.
“i didn’t know.. because you never expressed what you wanted. we were always so adamant about what i would do in the future, that we never focused on you, beomgyu. and i hated that… and the worst part is that i never felt the need to imagine a future with you, beomgyu, or worry about where we would be in the future. because i always thought it was common sense that you and i would stick together for our entire future. either as friends or… as acquaintances.” you cringed, knowing that a younger you would’ve never wished for you and beomgyu to just be acquaintances, you always wanted to be more. to have more with each other. be a part of each others lives. obviously you never confessed that to beomgyu. it would be hard to explain. hard to tell him that you loved him.. a lot more than friends would.
that’s what hurt the most when beomgyu disappeared from your life.
“mingi !! have you seen gyu?” you yelled across the courtyard, keeping an eye on mingi as you waited for a response. he shook his head ‘no’, looking around and witnessing the gossip happening around him. other than your immense liking towards beomgyu, mingi didn’t know much about the younger. he waved you over as he gathered intel, you listened to him, making your way over to the middle of the courtyard. where you met with mingi. orange, brown, red leaves falling all around you. mingi spotted the letters in your hands. that’s why you wanted to see beomgyu. to announce your complete win on how you did for your college prep exams. sure, you still had an entire year and a half to graduate, but this was an accomplishment, one that mean getting a head start on your dreams. “i think im gonna tell him.. about.. well you know.” you confessed, nervously tapping the papers in your hands. “i mean, surely he likes me back and-“
“you didn’t hear..?” mingi questioned, eyebrow raised. he was right next to you when he just heard the news. that’s why he asked you to stand next to him. he was sure you would’ve caught a listen to what was being said by the group of people next to you. the group of people that consisted of the class vice president, beomgyu’s neighbor, and his cousin. “yn.. i asked you to stand here for a reason…”
and that’s when you heard the news. from someone who’s name was not beomgyu. “oh! i saw him crying to his mom this morning, he only had a backpack and a suitcase. i’m assuming the company is taking care of everything else or maybe he’s just leaving his other belongings at home.. that’s if he ever comes back.” his neighbor spoke, with what you could promise was the slowest speech ever. you looked at mingi, complete disbelief pushing down your need to cry, the dryness in your throat stopping you from saying anything.
“i didn’t wanna say anything because.. what if it’s not true.. maybe he’s just out and about.. taking a vacation, going overseas for a week or so. point is, he can’t miss school so much, he’s class president, and he has exams coming up.. don’t get too worried yn, it’s gonna be okay and before you know it he’ll be back.” mingi explains, his voice sounding like he was a lot more panicked than he should be. again. he wasn’t even friends with beomgyu. but the thought of you being in a complete desperate situation worried him. he needed to be delusional for you, he needed to put on a denial-like state just for you.
“but his neighbor-“ you managed to get three words out before mingi stopped you. he grabbed your letters from your hands, putting them in your backpack.
“look, let’s just wait. okay, i doubt he would’ve left without saying a single word to you.” little did mingi know that, that was exactly the situation that you would be finding yourself in. despite mingi’s words, he could already feel himself disliking beomgyu. if what the two of you heard was true, then beomgyu really did leave without saying anything to you. not a single goodbye. mingi didn’t lack the ability to pick up social cues. so why was it that despite beomgyu’s immense crush on you, why would he leave without saying anything. was he doing it willingly or what.
“look yn. i never meant to leave-“ beomgyu could barely even start his sentence before you cut him off. you should’ve seen this coming, your emotions getting the best of you and the inability to properly handle your problems. you usually tried your best to keep calm and quietly work things out. but. beomgyu meant too much to you. he was your closest friend. one who had disappeared and treated you terribly on your first day on set together. one who suddenly became mingi’s biggest fan after you tried your best to communicate with him. you knew it wasn’t what he truly meant to express, but that didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt you at all.
“you didn’t mean to leave? without a single word, what.. did you just happen to accidentally leave, did you accidentally find your way in whole different country. did you accidentally pack your things and go? because, i’m a little confused here. how did you not mean to leave?” your eyebrows furrowed as you stood up straighter than you previously were. this whole situation was irritating. you had the boy, who you loved for years, standing in front of you claiming that he didn’t mean to hurt you. “you got mad at me and mingi for erasing you from our past, but you did the same to us.. you just deleted us from your life. or was getting upset at us one of your silly little pranks.”
“and what did you want me to do? i was following my dreams..” beomgyu felt himself practically begging for forgiveness at this point. his voice and words coming out as a plead. he needed you back in his life. he needed his rays of the sun back into his life. “i loved you, yn. i didn’t want to ever lose you. and if i communicated everything with you then i know that i would’ve never left to become an idol.”
“stop.. don’t do that. you don’t get to leave for years and just dump this on me. you don’t get to tell me that you love me years later. it’s not how this works beomgyu. and if you did communicate everything to me then i wouldve been there for you through it all.”
“you think i didn’t know that yn.. that’s the issue, you would’ve sacrificed everything for me when everything going so great for you. and my company wasn’t like mingi’s at all, you think i was able to contact people who weren’t my parents. i would only ever be able to talk to other trainees and my parents.. and i know that if i were to ever see you, i would truly throw all of that out the window.. which is why i never said goodbye. this was an opportunity of a lifetime and— i was a scared teenager who didn’t know what to do.” beomgyu explained, tears nearly spilling out his eyes. the coldness of the air felt like it was practically urging him to cry. you hated this. hated how he kind of made sense. he needed you out of his life in order to pursue the one career that would keep the two of you apart. the one career that would sometimes forbid it’s trainees from having a phone.
you kept your mouth shut. not because you wanted to. but you just couldn’t figure out what to say. were you supposed to confess your feelings as beomgyu had just done. were you supposed to tell him that you’ve been waiting years to hear him say those words to you. or were you supposed to be upset, angry about the fact that beomgyu had waited all these years to come forth even though he had just explained why.
you felt the chilly air hit your skin. red scarf protecting you from the cold. “umm— i have to go.. but i’ll send you a message..” you nodded to yourself not giving beomgyu a second to reply before finding yourself back into hongjoong’s apartment complex. stopping after passing the front doors, taking a second to take a deep breath and returning inside. beomgyu stood there. only being lit by the street lights. he had no idea what he was supposed to do now. that was until a familiar story entered his mind.
a story. about a god who loved a girl so much that he disobeyed his mother’s wishes. one where he loved the girl so much that he risked everything for her only to be met with a betrayal from her. the only way to win the god’s heart back was to complete trials set up by his mother. trials that were only completed with the aid of the god. but the girl’s persistence was what mattered. she never declined to do anything for the god’s mother as long as it meant that she would be able to see the god.
in beomgyu’s case. you were the god.. the god of love and attraction. the one that he so foolishly betrayed due to the words of others, although he did have to take responsibility.
like your favorite story.
