Put on a show for me Kazuha
Kaedehara Kazuha х Lumine CW: angst, pain, loss, death 529 words
He had been searching for her for a long time.
Too long to keep living, but not long enough to die.
Every rumor about her made his heart lurch. Every mention of a blonde girl who had died or gone missing felt like a splinter driven beneath his nails.
He knew the chances were almost nonexistent.
He knew that bodies lost in battle rarely came back.
Especially after a battle like that one.
But the heart has no use for probability.
It only knows how to hope.
Or how to lose its mind.
Kazuha no longer wore her sword at his hip.
He had fashioned a sheath from leather straps and ribbons and fastened it across his chest, over his heart.
That way, he could feel as though she were still close.
He stopped speaking in poetry.
Then he stopped speaking altogether.
People he met on the road called him strange. Feral. Lost.
He agreed.
They did not know that he had already died the day she never came back.
One day, beneath a sky that felt especially heavy, thick with the promise of a storm, he came upon a ruined shrine at the edge of the forest.
The place was rotten and abandoned, heavy with the smell of decay and damp ash.
He did not want to go inside.
But the wind pulled him in.
Deep within the shrine, in a silence that smelled of death, he saw a figure.
Weightless.
Faintly glowing.
His knees gave out before his mind could understand what he was seeing.
It was her.
Lumine.
Standing there.
Watching him.
No older. No younger.
Exactly as he remembered her.
“You…” he breathed.
The air caught sharp in his throat.
She did not answer.
She only stared at him.
Her eyes were not the eyes of the living.
They were not the eyes of the dead, either.
They were empty.
He moved closer.
Slowly.
He reached out.
But he did not touch her.
He did not dare.
“Why are you here…? Why did you…”
Then he heard it.
A whisper.
From somewhere inside him.
Or somewhere beyond him.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Kazuha… I’m tired of being alone.”
He fell to his knees.
“I’m sorry…” he whispered. “I didn’t come sooner… I couldn’t save you… I…”
She knelt before him.
Close.
Her fingers hovered beside his face without ever touching it.
The tears came on their own.
His lips tasted of salt, like the sea into which he had once screamed her name.
“Come with me…”
He closed his eyes.
And for one fleeting moment—for the first time in all that time—
it did not hurt.
. . .
When Beidou found him a week later, he was no longer breathing.
His body rested against the wall, his hands clenched, a faint smile still lingering on his lips.
Lumine’s sword was still pressed over his heart.
Beside him lay a dried sakura blossom.
Her favorite.
No one knew why he had gone there.
But Beidou knew.
Kazuha had finally found what he had been searching for.
Or he had given everything he had to find her.
And the wind no longer wept.
It was silent.
Forever.
