hello
Holy sh-
The expression on Cullen's face. The not very subtle implications of the situation from such a simple setup. Why is Greendelle so magical.
Art made for Cullenite event at Magic City Con.
Step by step here.
Frudge, I love greendelle's art. I'm obsessed with it.
* Cullen Armor Reference for Fanfic Writers *
I decided to whip up this little visual helper really quickly since I noticed some writers struggling to appropriately name the parts of Cullen’s outfit. Here, I’ve offered some lore-friendly (and real-life armor) terms to use if you’re ever in need of an accurate word for a certain piece.
Clicky for full-size.
Ooh, fic reference for armor. Much appreciated.

I’ve seen a lot of posts calling out Cullen as being unqualified to command the Inquisition’s forces. These posts usually suggest that Cassandra should have recruited someone else.
And, look, if people don’t like Cullen and wish that someone else had appeared in their place because of that, then… fine? Okay. Whatever. I’m not here to tell people what fictional characters to enjoy.
What I am here to do is to is argue against the idea that he was included as fanservice in spite of having an insufficient resume.
Cullen served for seven years under Knight-Commander Meredith Stannard. And, whatever you think of Meredith, there was a reason why she was the most powerful Templar in eastern Thedas. She was a prodigy who overthrew a corrupt dictator while she was still in her twenties. She kept hundreds of elite warriors in line even as she slipped into madness. She took over a city-state. She was probably one hell of a mentor.
Considering the blood magic problem in Kirkwall, Cullen’s service there would have involved a lot more open combat than most prison-guard Templars are likely to see. He would have been leading squads to take down demons and apostates on a regular basis.
Is that the same as leading an army? No. But don’t forget that Justinia had no idea that Corypheus existed when she asked Leliana and Cassandra to form the Inquisition. She thought she was putting together a force to contain the worst excesses of the Mage-Templar war. Someone with experience training recruits and putting together squads to contain local threads? Is exactly who they would have been looking for.
Cullen was also in charge of the Kirkwall Templars for at least three years – more, probably, since by the end of DA2 he’s taken over operations to the extent that the troops side with him over Meredith. He was responsible for training, provisioning, and keeping good relations with the local guard. All things that he also needs to do as Commander of the Inquisition, which is an NGO that needs to maintain partnerships with national militaries.
Recruiting Cullen is also important symbolically – something that Justinia would have been very aware of. It shows current Templars that there’s a place for them if they choose to walk away from the war. At the end of Inquisition, the remains of the organization decide whether or not to stay on lyrium entirely based on Cullen’s example. His finding another, better way to serve is kind of a huge deal for them.
And who else where they going to ask? The thing with experienced military commanders is that they usually gain that experience working in national militaries. They already have jobs. They are not looking to join up with a bunch of religious fanatics camping in the mountains.
Bringing Cullen into the Inquisition was probably the best option available to Cassandra.
Obviously the writers could have made up, oh, an invincible Rivaini seer princess general who’s won ten dozen military engagements in a war that no one has ever heard of before, and who for some reason has no other personal commitments. But barring that, Cullen was a damn good candidate.
DA:I Trespasser: Credits Dialogue
No spoilers, really!
During the credits for the Dragon Age: Inquisition - Trespasser DLC, Cassandra reads excerpts of Varric’s new Inquisition-inspired book, “All This Shit Is Weird”.
The audio is the best part, because she imitates the voices and accents of every character. <3 Here are all the audio transcripts:
1. What is this? A new book? “All This Shit Is Weird.” Oh, Varric. That is a terrible title. What are you even thinking?”
2. “The sky churned like a roiling sea on a dark and stormy night, centered on a gaping hole that led to the ass-end of nowhere.” “A hole that spit up many things that day: comets, demons...and whole lot of trouble.” (Gasps.) It’s about the Inquisition!
3. “The din of the tavern cut the silence like it owned the Carta money. In the middle, in her element, Red Jenny. She looked me up and down - mostly down.” ‘Not playing, weirdy,’ she said, gesturing with, and dismissively eating, a sandwich. ‘Don’t write that. Seriously, piss up a rope.’ “Sera made the subtext text, which suited me fine.”
4. “The court enchanter swirled into the room like a drop of beautiful poison spreading in a wine glass. She sized me up with a glance.” ‘I’m so glad you made it, my dear,’ she said, ‘I am Madame de Fer, the most terrifying person you shall ever meet.’
5. “Leliana enfolded Alphonse in an embrace as warm as a serpent’s kiss. ‘I always knew I could count on your support.’” “The count did not feel the bite of her poisoned dart until it was too late. ‘Even if it requires...your death.’”
6. “Drops of rain glistened on the griffon medallion grasped tightly in Blackwall’s hand. ‘The Silverite Wings of Valor. They mean nothing.’” “He flung the medal to the cold and uncaring ground. ‘You don’t know what I’ve done! You. Don’t. Know. Me.’” (Sighs.) So romantic.
7. “Cole moved like a shadow that also moved like a knife, a shadow wearing a hat where dreams came to die.” “‘It’s a riddle,’ he whispered. ‘A cold riddle that gnaws at your mind, but you’ll feel better when it’s gone.’” That...makes as much sense as anything Cole says.
8. “Do you place your Herald above the law, Ambassador?” “‘Whose law, my lady?’ Josephine’s eyes glittered like angry opals. ‘The law destroyed by rebellion? By civil war? By poor fiscal management? We are the law!’”
9. “We left our mark on Adamant, but the dust hadn’t settled...and neither had Harding.” ‘I can offer you a drink, if I catch your meaning.’ ‘If you’d caught my meaning, you’d have offered a double.’ What is even happening here?
10. “The Iron Bull was a great slab of muscle with horns that could hang a tapestry. One eye scanned for threats, while the other hid behind an eye patch like a Chantry sister’s old sins.” “‘Come on,’ he barked, not looking back as he entered. ‘The dancer with the great rack comes on in five.’” That is...spot-on, actually.
11. “The commander had the look of a templar that had seen the worst of humanity, yet still had the time to style his hair.” “‘This isn’t just a war,’ he said, his gaze steely like a dull blade. ‘It’s the only war.’” Cullen! That’s Cullen!
12. The mage wore a class of handsome sneer cultivated by a thousand years of Tevinter elitism.” “The name’s Dorian,” he glared. “D-O-R-I-A-N. Spell it right, you marble-headed lump, or it’s...toad time.” A toad? That’s hardly credible.
13. “The bald elf spun, mage staff crackling like the city after a good man’s murder. ‘You’re crazy!’ the red templar cried in terror.” Moonlight glinted off of ears like the knives you never see coming. “Better to fade out than burn away.” Ugh. Varric.
14. Wait, where am I? I don’t...oh, here it is. “The Seeker clutched at my vest, her tears as desperate as they were pitiful.” “Varric, I was wrong about everything,” she sobbed. “Could you find it in your noble heart to forgive me?” That dwarf, he...he… He put me in the book! (Giggles.) I’m in the book! I am reading the shit out of this.

Cullen getting bugged by everyone else… this shit is gold
Haha, I’m pretty sure not all the messengers were actually Harding, but I’m fairly certain its her voice actor. Poor not!Harding!
Fontofnothing shared this unused game file of Cullen telling the Inquisitor this:
“Honestly, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of you, but we’d only just met.”
Apparently there’s chunk of dialogue that was supposed to be part of “hang time” with Cullen, sort of like Sera’s roof time, and it was cut. There’s a bunch of other chit chat lines but this one - I mean COME ON BIOWARE, COULD YOU NOT HAVE SHOEHORNED THIS IN ANYWAY???
I don’t know if I’m late to the party on this, but I’ve never heard it.
what the shit… where are the other lines?? sounds like there’s more to this convo and I wanna hear it
15 Honestly, I couldn’t keep my eyes off you.mp3

THIS IS THE BEST. THIS IS THE BEST. DA:O & DA2 CROSSOVERS. Gah. So good.
Oh, for fuck’s sake!
i think this scene offers a precious little peek into Cullen’s naughty nature, a facet which is—for whatever reason—gleaned over in his romance. Some writers tend to paint the man as some priggish virgin, but this demonstrates he’s accepting, if not amused by bawdiness.
I don’t know about gleaned over. The man does take you on top of his desk in a room with 3 unlocked doors and guards that seem to have no issue barging in. Or the very least gives zero cares over the fact there are also guards right outside his doors that can hear everything—maybe that’s why he isn’t worried about the doors being unlocked. Everyone can already hear what’s going on in there.
It’s probably pretty hard to live in Templar barracks for fifteen years without overhearing your colleagues. Not to mention mages who aren’t nearly as discreet as they think they are.
So maybe being loud isn’t a big deal for him.
I think you can argue that Cullen’s not priggish about sex so much as he’s concerned about being appropriate. He runs away from Amell/Surana because it would be wrong to get involved with her, and he stumbles over what to call the employees of the Blooming Rose because he can’t come up with a polite word for them (the term ”sex workers” presumably not being a thing in Thedas society).
If he’s repressed it’s because he’s kind of a loner. He worries a lot about whether his attentions are wanted and the Inquisitor is serious about him. Once he gets over his personal hurdles his, uh, directness shows that he’s probably give sex a fair amount of thought.
This exactly. Any unsureness he shows comes entirely from not being sure if his affections are wanted or returned. He’s not a blushing virgin…he’s just highly respectful, and fairly obviously doesn’t want anything with the Inquisitor to be just a fling. But once he knows that you do want him, and that you want it to be something that lasts, he’s kissing you senseless on the ramparts (with guards walking past, presumably pretending not to see anything) and making sweet filthy love to you right there on his desk.
On a related note, can you imagine the guards outside the tower?
“I have some reports for the Commander…” (Listens) “Um…is he…is that the Inquisitor moaning in there?”
(Tower guard) “Yeeep. You might want to hold off on delivering those for twenty minutes or so.” (More listening) “Maybe an hour.”
“Yeah. Good call. I don’t want to end up posted to the Hissing Wastes. Who won the pool, then?”
“Hicks and Rawlins. He had the day and she said the desk. Bastards. I was sure it would be the War Table.”
“Yeah, me too…”
(muffled screaming of Cullen’s name)
“…anyway, we still on for Diamondback after duty tonight?”
“Of course.”
What’s even better is how the gossip must travel to the camps below the keep.
By the time the rank and file hear about the Commander and the Inquisitor, the rumour is that they had a marathon night of passion that resulted in two fade rifts opening and fourteen separate temptations by desire demons.
This. This so much. I’m dying….
I’m not sure how the FUCK I missed this, but THIS. EVERY SINGLE BIT OF THIS. IT IS GOLDEN COMMENTARY. Cullen’s a private person, respectable, wants consent, does have a sense of humor, and I want a comic with the above dialogue XD
Cullenmance Inquisitor receiving a Mabari puppy after defeating Corypheus, Cullen stammering on about how important they are in Fereldan culture, representing loyalty and undying love. It slowly dawns on the Inquisitor this is an Engagement Puppy.
