stubborn! this man is stubborn! HE hasn’t done ANYTHING, and that’s the truth! insists it to be so aloud before his hands slam upon thin, pointed hips.
and yes, he does drink coffee, thank you very much. the most expensive kinds!
“well, one of my rules is to not get involved with things that do not pertain to me.” when the head of the victim resembles his own, surely then yes, it does pertain to jasper. juliet sure knows how to pick them! her romeo doesn’t seem to be able to talk his way out of this one. “and to my understanding, you cannot make me do anything.”
but the other man can tie jasper up in all sorts of time consuming, unfortunate ways. weighs his options heavily here; to testify means having his name on the record, and her own too…and that creates a connection he’s been all to eager to avoid these last —— what now? eight years? more?
but to not testify, to drag this on further…damn, what should he do? perhaps it’s best to dig a little himself, and probe to see what’s really required of him before seeming so adamantly against the idea. does that make him more suspicious? usually can talk his way out of everything, but mr. godot seems apt to hit the target right dead center.
“you want us to testify,” he clarifies. “on what grounds? for the prosecution, yes? as witnesses?”
and nothing more? that’s what he’s really getting at here.
“ha...!” the prosecutor laughs, and though he feels the mirth that prompted the laugh, the sound itself is as bitter as pitch-black espresso on a starless night. one of his rules, he says, as if he could possibly understand what it’s like to be governed by your ideals. as if he could understand what it means to be a man reborn, hellfire clinging to him like dark sludge. he lives by his rules, for they are all that ties him back to justice.
“that’s it.” at least, that’s all the prosecution wants from the lovebirds. defence attorneys are known among prosecutors as goody-two-shoes, altruists who would do anything to get their client off the hook. because they believe in their innocence when the system won’t.
how much had godot admired that mindset, once...?
godot smiles without joy. “you just need to testify to what you saw. the prosecutor’s office... specifically, the one assigned to this case... will help you two prepare your statements. every word is important in a testimony.” a shake of his head, inhaling the deep aroma from his coffee mug before he took down two gulps. it burned. “the defence will cross-examine, but if you’re not lying, there won’t be anything to pick up on. what we really need... is a nail in the defence’s coffin.”
