“I don’t like you anymore.”
“What?”
“You heard me. I don’t like you.”
Kuroo’s expression scrunches in bewilderment when you shrug off his arms, his confusion evident in the deep wrinkle between his brows and the curl of his lips.You have your back to him so you can’t see his soured face but you can imagine what it must look like as you rinse off another soapy glass under the hot water.
“Why?”
“You know why.”
“I don’t.”
“Figure it out then,” you sigh, turning off the tap and towelling your hands dry before skirting around him to get to the living room, where you promptly plop down on the sofa. Kuroo trails after you like a lost kitten, mentally trying to figure what exactly you’re trying to get at. He replays his day in his mind. He woke up, got ready for work, kissed you goodbye before leaving for the office and then came home 9 hours later and made a beeline for the shower before sitting for dinner with you and-
Oh shit.
“Baby, are you mad?” he asks, tentatively taking a seat beside you, to which you respond by shuffling away.
“No. I just don’t like you.”
“But you love me, don’t you?”
You nod, a quick yet hesitant jerk of your chin. “I do. Just don’t like you very much.”
“Is it because I didn’t give you a kiss when I got home?” Slowly, he shifts closer to you, biting back a smile when you twist your head to look firmly away from him.
“You didn’t even say hello to me,” you sniff.
“Aw, baby,” he coos gently, placing his hand on your forearm. But you snatch it away and huff loudly.
“Don’t ‘aw baby’ me! You’re so rude and insensitive and- and- god! You’re such a dickhead!”
If this was a serious argument, Kuroo would be hurt by your words but right now, he’s rather amused by your cute reaction. So he tries again, twisting you in his direction with a firm grip around your waist that you don’t resist, and he’s presented with a deep, grumpy scowl - it’s such an adorable look on you.
“Did someone miss me?” he teases lightly, pinching at the apple of your cheek before you wrench your head back in annoyance.
“No,” you lie. “Why would I miss a horrible man like you?”
He gasps dramatically and tugs you closer until your thighs are touching. “That’s not very nice.”
“You’re not very nice.”
“Well, I missed you an awful lot,” he says, nuzzling his face into your neck even as you try to halfheartedly squirm away.
“You’ve got a funny way of showing it!”
“I also had a very long, exhausting day. Things slip my mind sometimes.”
“Oh, so I’m just a thing, am I?!”
“Baby,” he whines, dragging the word out. “I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to ignore you like that.”
“Hmph!” You pout and turn your face away from him again, even though he’s got you trapped in the circle of his arms. With a sigh, he lifts you bodily and plops you in his lap so that you have no choice but to look at him as he presses you close to his chest.
“Let me make it up to you,” he says, leaning in for a kiss, but you’re stubborn as ever and tip backwards and out of reach.
“No!”
“Why not?”
“Cos I don’t like you!”
Kuroo readjusts his grip and follows you down, curving his body over yours until he can flutter tiny, feathery kisses over your collarbone. His soft lips and hair tickle your skin and you can’t hold back the giggle that’s bubbling in your chest at the sensation. The first burst of laughter makes him grin. “Gotcha.”
From there, he pitches forward a little more and simultaneously pulls you towards him with a hand splayed between your shoulder blades so that he can steal a kiss from your lips. You don’t stand a chance when his mouth brushes yours, melting into him instantly as your arms loop around his neck to pull him closer. Kuroo kisses you until you’re thoroughly breathless and just a little bit dizzy from how his tongue roves your mouth. When he pulls back, there’s a dopey little smile on your face and your lips are plump and shining. He kisses the corner of your mouth and noses at your cheek with a smirk.
“Better?” You hum and nod, wriggling closer to him. “Am I forgiven?”
“Yeah,” you sigh and he chuckles as you rest your head on his shoulder.
This party is not unlike the previous ones you’ve attended; it always gets to a point where you get a little tired of everything. Your cheeks sting from offering kind smiles to everyone, and your feet hurt from walking around too long, and honestly? You really needed to take a breather. You’re sure no one in the office will miss you too much.
“Figured I’d find you here.” Unless that someone is Kuroo Tetsurō. Without turning around to face him, the corners of your lips curve upward to form a small smile he can’t see but seems to perceive with that sixth sense he has regarding you. “Got too boring for you?”
You give a light shrug before replying, although your eyes remain downcast as you readjust the strap around your ankle. You hear more than see him sitting down right beside you on the sidewalk with a low huff escaping his lips when he plops down, his shoulder brushing yours.
“I just needed some fresh air, it’s been a long night. Why aren’t you enjoying the party?”
You can tell that his eyes are on you. Once again, not because you see it, but because they always seem to be. Right now, they roam your face slowly, looking for any sign of dishonesty or discomfort. When he deems your expression sincere enough, he gives a shrug of his own.
“I saw you walking out and I wanted to make sure you were okay.” His tone is easygoing, only adding to his nonchalant demeanor.
The thing is, he’s acting a little too nonchalant to be genuine. This makes your smile broaden, and you glance at him from the corner of your eye.
“What are you, my dad?” you say to lighten the mood. You really are okay; it’s just that the party wasn’t too enjoyable.
“Nope. I am your…” He snaps his fingers and then points at you with a cheeky smile. “Work husband.”
He admires the way your head is thrown back when you laugh, and his own smile gets a little bigger when he sees the crinkles in the corners of your eyes.
“I didn’t know we were official,” you joke.
Kuroo plasters a silly-looking, offended look on his face, a hand on his chest as he lets out a dramatic gasp.
“What do you mean? I literally gave you a paper clip ring just this morning.”
“You mean this one?” you ask with a chuckle as you show off your ring finger to him.
“Yeah, that one,” Kuroo says.
After just a second, he averts his gaze and chews on the inside of his cheek, hoping, praying that he isn’t blushing. He’s pretty sure that he is.
If anyone had told you a couple months ago that you’d be sitting right next to Kuroo Tetsurō on the sidewalk at almost midnight and find his company actually enjoyable, you probably would’ve laughed right in their face. It’s ironic, because when you first met him, you never thought you’d be able to stand him. Now you can’t picture yourself without him. It was an accident, really — one you don’t really hate.
In all honesty, though, you’re getting a little tired of the whole cat and mouse game you two have been playing for the last three months.
“I couldn’t possibly leave my house without it,” you say like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, then gesture at your outfit. “It matches perfectly.”
Kuroo scoffs, his right hand shooting to his pocket to fish out something.
“How about an upgrade?” he says, opening the palm of his hand to reveal a slightly crumpled paper ring. “I made it myself.”
He doesn’t add that he stayed up all night trying to make it look as perfect as he could, because, surprisingly, paper rings are not that easy to make, despite how effortless the people in the tutorials make it look.
Your eyebrows shoot up when you look at it, and you have to gnaw on your bottom lip to suppress a smile. Instead, you wrinkle your nose, although the smile ends up surfacing inevitably.
“I don’t know if it’ll go with my outfit.”
“Please,” Kuroo begins as he takes your hand in his. His skin is warm, calloused fingertips graze your skin as he pinches the paper clip ring to slide it off your finger. “Haven’t you heard? Paper is all the rage in the fashion industry lately.” He takes the ring made out of paper between his index and thumb and slips it onto your ring finger, the action surprisingly tender. “Paper hats. Paper skirts. Paper underwear.” After a pause, he lowers his voice to add, “Not a good idea, by the way. Not speaking from experience.”
His comment rips a hearty laugh out of you, and you shake your head with amusement as you admire the new accessory wrapped surrounding the base of your finger.
“Paper rings?” you offer, wiggling your fingers in his face.
“Especially paper rings.” He nods.
“Thank you,” you whisper.
There’s so much sincerity in your voice that it feels like you’re thanking him for more than just the ring; which… maybe you are. You don’t know. He doesn’t know. But really, who cares? Because—
“Can I kiss you?”
It’s the way he says it that makes you laugh. It wasn’t a nervous blurt out. His knee isn’t bouncing the way it does when he’s feeling anxious, and he’s not running his fingers through his permanently messy hair. Which is why, at first, you think it’s a joke.
“I… what?” you ask when you see just how serious he looks.
Which means… all right. It wasn’t a mistake. It wasn’t impulsive, either. And the expectant look on his face hints at how long he’s waited to ask you that.
“I want to kiss you,” he says, a little more firmly this time.
And you’re suddenly speechless, so you simply nod. You probably look like an idiot right now. He doesn’t seem to care, though. Neither do you, because his face is inching closer, and he’s closing his eyes, and then everything goes dark because without realizing it, you have closed your eyes, and then ohmyGodKurooTetsurōiskissingyou. And much to your dismay, it’s short. Too short. You didn’t even have time to really savor it!
“Tetsu—”
“It’s all right,” he says, and suddenly his lips are on yours again.
They’re soft, and warm, and they taste a little bit like the cold wine he had been drinking earlier tonight, and you want more. Kuroo, seemingly attuned to you, obliges.
He breaks the second kiss to take a quick breath before tilting his head to the side to dive in again, and the third kiss is deeper, and slower than the first two, and you feel everything so much more. His hand on the nape of your neck, his thumb tracing the ring’s rim around your finger, his hot breath against your skin.
“I’ve waited my whole life for that,” you say, a little out of breath.
“We haven’t known each other that long,” he whispers against the corner of your mouth. Kuroo laughs when you shove him away with a groan, his hand catching yours before you can do too much damage and placing it atop his chest; right over his heart. It’s beating so fast that it just might leap right out of his chest. “Me too.”
