The question caught you by surprise, prompting you to tear your gaze away from the moonlit lake and face Megumi. He looked deeply concentrated on something, seeming as if he had voiced his thoughts aloud without even noticing.
âDepends on how you look at it,â you responded after a few moments, hands supporting your weight against the damp grass beneath you. âDepends on the situation, really.â
Megumi looked up at you, though your stare had returned to the body of water before you. The moonlight reflected off the water and shone brightly on your face. It seemed as though you were the one glowing, illuminating the night with your grandeur.
The moonâs light was a lame attempt at imitating your beauty.
âWhat do you mean?â he asked curiously, mirroring your movements as he, too, leaned back ever so slightly, hands supporting him.
âWell, what if you knew that speaking would result in something horrible? Far worse than your death?â you suggested, exposed legs dangling in the cold water beneath you. âWould you be selfish to speak? Or would you be selfless for sacrificing yourself for the greater good of others?â
The crickets chorded around you along with the hammering of Megumiâs heart against his chest. He wondered if he should speak, bare his soul to you in the dead of night, let his mouth run freely without a filter from his brain, words coming directly from his heart.
âAnd what would you do?â Megumi inquired. âIn the name of love, let's sayâwould you speak? Or die?â
You were silent in thought for a moment, staring up at the stars.
âI think I would rather die.â You furrowed your brows at your words, almost as if you were unsure of them, yourself. âWhat if your love is unrequited? What if they love you too, but canât afford to be with you?â You shook your head, turning your head and meeting Megumiâs eyes. âDeath is better than living a love loveless and full of misery.â
You both went quiet then, staring into the otherâs eyes without a word exchanged beneath you. It took everything in Megumi not to lean over and kiss you, to take your face in his hands with the utmost care, feel your lips against his and hear the whisper of his name leave your lips.
You turned back around then, letting out a sigh.
âWhy do you ask?â
Megumi did the same as you, looking up at the moon staring down at him. Why did he ask? What answer was he expecting to hear? He wasnât quite sure.
At that moment, Megumi decided he would continue to wallow in death; he would love you silently and from afar, ensuring that you would never become aware of his feelings. He agreed with your statement, deciding death would be better than living without the one person he held most dear.
