This is George Gordon Henderson one of the last Rats of Tobruk in Northern Tasmania
He enlisted as a private in the 2/12 Australian Infantry Battalion in October 1939 and travelled to England on the Queen Mary. From there he was posted to the Middle East and saw active service during the siege of Tobruk. The 2/12 Battalion’s battle honors are well documented, never beaten in battle, they finished their tour in the Middle East and were sent straight to New Guinea and the war in the Pacific. In all he spent 491 days service in Australia and 904 days overseas before eventually being discharged in March 1944.
