3D Printed Custom Urns
James George contact me with what appears to be the tackiest use of 3D Printing - crematorium urns which can the appearance of the deceased, either as a bust or … and ACTION FIGURE!
Personal Urns are a new and exciting way to memorialize your loved one.
Celebrate life in a most personal style and create a perfect replica of that special someone!
Now we can create a custom cremation urn for ashes in the image of your loved one or favorite celebrity or hero, even President Obama! When it comes to cremation urns, there are countless styles to choose from. You can select a lovely wooden box that would look stunning on the mantle, or you can opt for traditional metal urns. However, there is another option available that you might not be aware of. With personal urns, you can have a lifelike bust of your loved one that doubles as an urn for the ashes. For people with longer hair we will use a wig to match. Shorter hair can be made as part of the urn itself. A solid brass nameplate is available. We are sorry, but we cannot make personal urns for pets.
Turns out these have been available for a couple of years or so ….

Test scan from around 65 photos of a statue at Nilsiänkatu using Canon 5D mk.1 and PhotoScanPro.
First images were shot standing and second set crouching down with upward angle.
Model is made from a medium dense point cloud (as denser point cloud would take a day to calculate). Mesh hasn't been cleaned up at all. If the original images would be masked to remove the background, the result should be much better. This software achieves quite impressive results already straight from the images without hardly any post-production.

Testing 3D-scanning from photographs with PhotoScanPro at the studio 31/10/14-02/11/14 with Fredrik Enges, Kristoffer Ala-Ketola & Erno-Erik Raitanen
4 x Canon Eos 5D (80mm) + Canon 60D (40mm)
4 x Arrilite bounced from the ceiling + 2 x Redheads bounced off from the floor + 2 x Smaller Arrilites with diffusion straight to the subject
Conclusion: Static objects are fairly easy to scan using this technique and results are quite good. To properly scan a human, five cameras is not enough.. Nine cameras, each in every 40 degree angle to the subject and remote control to set them off simultaneously, should achieve far better results. With nine cameras and studio flashes it would even be possible to scan person in motion. In any case, the results were already quite impressive and most problems were just caused the need for the sitter to turn in order for us to capture both sides of the body.
