an anecdote on the power of positive experiences after trauma

I was talking to someone and they wanted to have a video call. I said video calls made me anxious but I was willing to try a bit. So we talked a bit, I got anxious, and I ended the call. Then I said I was anxious abt the call, and they said they were sorry they made me feel that way and they wouldn’t bother me anymore. Which I interpreted as them saying they weren’t gonna talk to me anymore because they were taking my anxiety personally for some reason. Then I started to explain that it wasn’t just them, I was anxious with anyone and there was really no need to stop talking, and after a while they said oh I’m just going to sleep we’ll talk later.

What I realized was that I was having a trauma response. Because I have, in fact, had people say they weren’t gonna interact with me anymore (or as abusive people like to, threaten to leave while not actually doing it) because I wasn’t 100% sure of something before trying and then had to stop, or because my reaction wasn’t to their liking, and I was trying to “appease” them. I was triggered. And had this person not reacted differently than I expected, I would not have realized that this reaction of mine isn’t healthy, it’s trauma based.

Traumatized people need perspective.

Cuz’ one really difficult part of recovery is when you reach a healthy weight and people check up on you less because they assume this means you are better. Eating disorders are largely psychological and you cannot tell the severity of someone’s ED by their weight.

What’s in a Name?
