In memory of Sharon Down, 1943- 2026. Sharon had a lifelong love for rug hooking, and relished her time spent with friends at hook-ins, hooking masterful and whimsical patterns such as these. Sharon was a long time member of the Kitchener Waterloo Rug Hooking Guild. Many of us have parts of her rug supplies in our stashes and probably already worked into our latest rugs. Thank you , Sharon, for your smiles and positivity throughout the years. You will be missed.
Outside Summertime Hook ins have started. Join us on Thursday afternoons under the Gazebo at Winston Park, Kitchener, ON and July 18 and Aug 15 at Castle Kilbride, Baden, ON. Details on our events page.

Our Rug Hookers have jumped right into spring, going which way and that, to Hook-Ins in Woodstock and Owen Sound, the Hockley Valley Rug Hooking retreat, the WeftFest Fibre Arts Festival in Waterloo , and then many are off straight away to the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild Annual Conference in Oakville this weekend. The rug hooking display at this event will be amazing.
Guild member, Anita Hebblewaite is highlighted here with her rug designed by Elaine Chalmers from the Cozy Nook in Neustadt, ON. 26 inch square and color planning inspired by her granddaughter's wedding and hooked during the 10 min Hooking Challenge with Deanne Fitzpatrick in 2025. While not the colors we think for spring, it sure hints of the transitions, from the brown flora to the colors starting to pop around us.
Great opportunity for our new and ( experienced ) rug hookers to get supplies and materials for your projects.

A marvelous day at the Kitchener Waterloo Rug Hooking Regional Hook-In 2025 . A fun day of rug hooking, sharing, shopping and eating. Thank-you to all who joined the fun. We will be back in 2026!

Admission $5.00. Bring a mug, a lunch and your rug hooking projects. Doors open at 9:30am. Plan to stay until 3pm. Refreshments and treats will be provided. There will be rug hooking vendors, scissor and cutter sharpening, flea market and prizes. For new rug hookers, ask to be directed to the Beginners Table.

Lorna, Donna and Susan from our Guild went to Guatemala in 2024 for the MultiColores Rug Hooking Tour. They shared their adventure with us at our May meeting . These are the hooked rugs they started on this tour.
Although not known for Rug Hooking, the Maya women have embraced this hooking craft: using fabulous bright colors from repurposed t-shirt fabrics, they create original designs inspired by traditional motifs, geometrics and figurative shapes such as birds and animals. Their rugs are exhibited in galleries in the US and provide income for their families and pay for improvements in their villages. An amazing story !

Hooking through this snowy winter and thinking of spring already! At February's meeting, our program coordinator, Lorna Vogel, led us in a fun workshop to make Quilli pendants with our wool worms. Welcome to 2025! KWRHG members brought in the new year by sharing a delicious potluck luncheon at our first full day Hook In for 2025. Always exciting to see what everyone has cooked or hooked up.
And rug hooking is not strictly for the floor or the wall. Think..rugs for fashion and function! Lorna Vogel, Judy Rys, Ruth Heslop and other members plus their instructors contributed these hooked creations. So many opportunities these days to learn, grow and create using just yarn or cut fibres and a hook.
We have wrapped up the 2024 hooking season with a lovely full day of rug hooking, delicious food and for some, a snow hike through this beautiful property. This is fast becoming a yearly event for all of us!
