A masterpost on Togashi’s gay subtext and why it’s intentional.
Hi ! After seeing so many posts about Togashi dropping subtext about Killua’s possible romantic feelings for Gon, I thought it’d be a good idea to make a sort of “masterpost” with all the subtext that Togashi has included into his work.
I usually see a lot of people trying to say that HxH isn’t about romance and that Togashi isn’t interested in writing romance into the manga, but when you analyze all the subtext that’s been going on the further Gon and Killua’s relationship progresses, I think it’s incorrect to say that Togashi has never hinted at the possibility of romance in HxH.
This is going to be a long post, enjoy your read!
Also, please note that I will only base this analysis on the manga, so there can be no mistake that “maybe this is just something the anime made gayer” : i want to prove that the subtext is 100% intentional on Togashi’s part.
I’d also like to mention, although I will analyze it further after listing the subtext, that Togashi is a VERY smart man. There are always little details in the story and/or foreshadowing that are easily missed at first but when you notice them, it truly makes you understand how much attention and care Togashi puts into his work. There are countless details and symbolism that are analyzed daily through wonderful meta posts, from the main 4′s birthdays and their link to their character or the religious symbolism in Kurapika’s story arc…. Togashi loves to foreshadow and plant little details into his work, so when Togashi plants subtext, I’m sure he 100% knows that he’s writing it, and it can’t be seen as unintentional.
I’ll also link all my references for this post at the end of it, so feel free to read all the additional textposts and content if you want to know more.
Well, let’s get into it!
EDIT : i can’t believe this post is still being used as a reference it makes me so happy… thank you so much !!! i edited this to tweak it a bit because i wrote this a while ago and the phrasing seemed off to me, so if you’re reading or re-reading this post, hi, welcome to masterpost on gay subtext 2.0 !

I don’t think we talk enough about the fact that Leorio’s nen abilities aren’t just for punching assholes in the face
They serve a medical purpose (no equipment required= low cost, so he can most likely afford to treat patients for free)
If he could develop this ability and eliminate internal tumors completely…
Leorio could detect and cure cancer, and do it for free.
I love how the things that make gon seem adorable and innocent and the things that make him seem ruthless and terrifying are completely connected
he’s clueless about a lot of things (including some normal perceptions of morality)
he’s extremely forgiving (even when the person in question has done awful things that just didn’t happen to affect him personally)
he’s very trusting (because he can afford to be; if the person in question turns out to betray him he can just tear them apart and continue on his way)
he cares deeply for his friends (and has absolutely zero mercy for those who hurt them)
he deals with everything through unfailing optimism (and breaks down in spectacularly destructive ways when that optimism finally fails him)
he loves the thrill of adventure (especially combat)
i love gon. i love how complex and layered he is and how he turns the “plucky innocent shonen protagonist” trope completely on its head. I love Hunter x Hunter so much
Killugon meta: 「心中だな」 “A lovers’ suicide, I guess”
Hey everyone, welcome to yet another addition of HXH translation meta with your old pal hunterxhell. This time, I’m taking a look at what I think is, hands-down, one of if not the most important scenes in HXH for understanding Killua and his feelings for Gon. In fact, I’m going to make the case that this scene proves that those feelings are romantic in nature. Unfortunately, the translation for this scene was absolutely butchered (it’s by far the worst translation in the series), so all of the meaning was lost, including the wonderful Killugon subtext.

Horrible exorcists? More like horrible exes—
Fr, I wasn't going to make another compilation but this whole arc is jumping around in my brain again because the anime handled it so well❤️
Ok, it's all fun and games but actually, what point is Midorikawa canonically making in the Miharu arc?
This arc is about Matoba, that's a fact. He's so directly paralleled with Miharu Masakiyo that there's no other way to interpret it - at least when it comes to the general gist of "there was this exorcist who sacrificed what he wanted for the sake of his clan duty", that much is clear. The parallels are telling us, hey, you know what - Matoba feels the same. But Masakiyo's story is particularly about love, a doomed love. And i could try to omit that as just a discrepancy in details - Masakiyo sacrificed his love and Matoba sacrificed something else, like living a normal life, having a different occupation, etc. But one thing stands in the way of that - Natori is there. He's woven into this story. He's the one Matoba thinks of after it's all over, recalling a specific memory of him that was all about not getting what you want, as he says "And i thought there's no winning even in such a tiny thing"...
What's this all about?
Natori fitting into all this could make sense only if he was someone Matoba loved romantically, because otherwise why would Matoba have to sacrifice their connection for the sake of his clan, as the parallel with Masakiyo implies he did? Clan-wise, there'd be nothing preventing them from being friends. Whatever feuds existed between the clans long ago, we've never heard anyone being against them associating as a Natori and a Matoba, and Natori's already been working for the Matobas anyway, has free entry to their grounds apparently, etc.
I don't even ship them but i genuinely don't see any other explanation for this arc.
But there's no way that this could be the author's intent, right? This is not the kind of anime to feature a story of (male) gay love.
I really can't understand what Natori and Matoba's canon dynamic is.
Natori Shuuichi & Matoba Seiji
Every chapter of Natsuyuu where the horrible exorcists appear, for your reading convenience,
Volume 1 - No exorcists here :( Volume 2 - Natori introduced in chapter 7 Volume 3 - Natori appears in chapter 11, Matoba is mentioned for the first time. Volume 4 - Natori appears in Chapter 14, him and Natsume go to an onsen together Volume 5 - Tragically, no exorcist content in this volume. Volume 6 - Chapter 20, 21, and 22 are a 3 part story featuring Natori Volume 7 - Matoba makes his big debut in Chapters 23, 24, 25, and 26, alongside another appearance from Natori Volume 8 - Not an exorcist in sight Volume 9 - Matoba appears in Chapters 34, 35 Volume 10 - Natori appears in Chapter 39 Volume 11 - No exorcists Volume 12 - Chapters 49, 50, and 51 are a three part story. Natori appears in parts 2 and 3. Volume 13 - Matoba and Natori appear in Chapters 52, 53, and 54 Volume 15 - Natori appears in Chapters 60, 61, and 62 Volume 16 - No exorcists Volume 17 - Two part special story featuring baby Natori and baby Matoba Volume 18 - Natori appears in Chapters 72 and 73, Matoba is mentioned, but doesn’t show up Volume 19 - Matoba appears in Chapter 77 Volume 20 - Natori appears in Chapter 80 Volume 21 - Special Chapter featuring Baby Natori and Baby Matoba Volume 22 - Special chapter featuring Matoba Volume 23 - Chapters 92, 93, and 94 feature Matoba and Natori Volume 24 - Natori doesn’t technically show up, but the Natsume and co. watch one of his movies together in a Special Chapter. Currently no volume, presumably gonna be in Volume 25 - Natori and Matoba show up in chapters 100, 101, 102, and presumably the rest of the current arc, however long it ends up being.
*There are a couple of chapters where Natsume thinks about the exorcists and their images are seen, since the appearances are so brief, I didn’t feel it was necessary to include them.
If you’ve spotted any mistakes please let me know.

Summary:
He finds himself missing home, missing Japan. It’s certainly not the first time he’s felt this way in the year since he left, but he’s never felt it quite so keenly as he does now. Not that he regrets his decision to leave—it’s not in his nature to regret, after all, and there was never a doubt what he would have chosen anyway—but he’s suddenly reminded of the fact he’s alone, in a foreign country, on his birthday, for the first time.
Happy birthday Tezuka! Rejoining the fandom just in time to drop this nugget.
