The skies were on fire last night near Payne Lake. By the looks of the red there was a lot of excited oxygen at the high altitudes. Given I'm near the bottom of Alberta, I'm looking at these auroras side on, getting an unobstructed view of the higher alititude reds that might be obfuscated by the bright greens if I was standing under them in Northern Alberta, like looking at a cut open layered cake, neat! #albertaaurorachasers #auroraborealis (at Payne Lake)

I had so much fun with these. Trista and I got talking about yoga and mindfulness and I was dying to create some images that express how I feel about these things and right away she said "I'll do it!" The idea is to use colour and lighting in the scene to express state of mind while meditating. While doing this I concentrate on how I feel and the sensations in my body when I inhale, then allow myself to notice the sounds and sensations in my environment on exhale and let those sensations drift through me only to go back to how I feel again in the next inhale, and so on. The two colours on each half, the orange and blue illustrate those two states of mind: opposite, but complimentary, like the sky is the canvas of the mind. Wow I'm feeling fluffy today. I used a blue gel on her left side and orange on the right softened by a white bounce for each, her face is also lit up by a touch of beauty dish and then I changed the white balance on each side. The combined practical and special effects help pull this look off with minimum amount of editing. Shot up top of nose hill park in Calgary Alberta, an epic storm rained down half an hour after the shoot, we hurried off the top of that hill, I don't want to get struck by lightening! #yoga #yyc #mindfulness #meditation #photography #strobist #alberta #beautifulalberta #nosehillpark (at Nose Hill Park)
An extremely long exposure taken just outside my door in the Serengeti. The lightning storm in the distance, stars streaking across the sky with candle lit acatia trees create an incredible atmosphere. All this as I realise there is nothing between me and the rest of the wilderness out there. This was just shortly before Nina and I were having fun with light paintings, writing our names into the sky.
