Breaking Down the Fourth Wall

'Breaking the fourth wall' is a term that refers to a point at which a character acknowledges that he or she is fictional. Any time a character turns to address the audience, or makes a comment that makes it seem like they are aware they in a TV show, film or play, they are 'breaking the fourth wall' that separates them from the audience.
