TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS IN STARWARS:

First of all whether you ship Reylo or not that’s FINE but I’m talking to the people who feel the need to express their “toxic” “absusive” relationship.

I completely understand how horrifying and tragic it is that there’s all kinds of domestic abuse out there and I would never belittle anyone’s feelings by saying it’s okay in any way to treat someone the way that Kylo and Rey did— however, the circumstances in that alternate universe are completely different. Love is not a sensitive topic and when it’s felt it’s usually followed by violence or an entire full blown war. That has always been the center of Star Wars: love.

Anakin and Padmé (in this worlds standards)- they are toxic because Anakin cared more about losing her than having her and Padmé was too naive to see her husbands flaws. He killed younglings and most of the Jedi for the sake of love, not to mention physically harming Padmé at the end. NOW- in that world the stakes were higher and the pressures of life and death were hand and hand with love. In our world, if it meant life or death in your control for the ones you love, I’m sure it wouldn’t be simple for you either.

Han and Leia (in this worlds standards) are actually pretty healthy considering banter is extremely healthy and he never had the personality that was being interrupted by expectations of the dark side.

Ben and Rey (the most controversial of all)- supposedly Ben was supposed to be young. Someone who only knew hurt and pain from a fairly young age and who was always put down by a “master” ought not to be the perfect gentlemen. It wouldn’t be realistic for Ben to court Rey in a loving and welcoming way. Slowly over time he grows less guarded around her and finally shows her who he could be because she brought him out of his misery by showing him he could be loved no matter what. They were both (in this worlds standards) toxic because they fulfilled needs within each other that they couldn’t do on their own. Kylo slandered Rey and do did she. They both tried to kill each other multiple times. BUT- in THEIR world, it truly is about more than sensitivity. Weve learned from episode 1 that pain and love go hand and hand and overcoming each characters demons makes for a more compelling redemption and love.

Those of you who are bashing Reylo fans for “condoning toxic behavior”, just understand that I’m not belittling your situation or others, but for Gods sake it’s a fictional movie with fictional characters and an incredibly unique storyline so different from our world. Here’s it’s not okay. There, that’s all they know.

The message was never to condone toxic behavior. It was to never give up on the ones you love because if you do, they are truly gone forever.
