I'm sure this has been discussed before but I was thinking about Expedition 33 today (as one does) and I was thinking about Lune and Sciel's reactions to their gommage and Verso's ending and I realized their reactions are pretty much the same in both events, Lune is understandably more panicked during the gommage though rather than angry.
I don't want to reduce their characters to being mere symbols but as a Verso defender, I really hate that people use Lune's angry glare as a reason to not pick Verso's ending. (???) But it seems like each of them represent one of the stages of grief.
Denial: Maelle, self explanatory but her wanting to remain in the canvas with painted Verso is her being in denial that her brother is gone.
Anger: Lune, her parents are gone, now her friends are too. It's not fair.
Bargaining: Monoco, literally bargains/duels his village chief (sorry, chef) to get his son back.
Depression: Verso, self explanatory again but he's tired. He doesn't want to exist like this anymore.
Acceptance: Sciel, during the gommage she holds out her arms, as if welcoming death and smiles. Verso's ending, she appears to be understanding and is the only other person to reach out to Verso.
I wrote this on the spur of the moment so I'm probably missing things or I could be wildly off the mark but the game is about grief and while the "5 stages of grief" is not exactly how grief works, it fits the game's theme.
