February 1st, 2024: A new geiko is born! Hidechiyo (秀千代) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho is celebrating her erikae! She is the second erikae for the new Masamiya okiya and the third geiko to reside there. She is also the first erikae for her kagai this year! Her outfit features waves with a Kai Awase (shell matching game) motif and a golden obi with karabana in a tortoiseshell pattern ^^ おめでとうさんどす秀千代さん ^o^! Image is courtesy of Ono No Komachi.
June 14th, 2023: A new maiko is born! Momitomo (もみ智) of Tanmika (丹美賀) in Pontocho is celebrating her misedashi! She is the second debut from Pontocho so far this year and the first debut from Tanmika since 2016! Her outfit features ships and waves with a tortoiseshell pattern obi ^^ おめでとうさんどすもみ智ちゃん ^o^! December 15th, 2022: Kyoto’s newest geiko is born! Katsuharu (佳つ春) of Odamoto (小田本) in Gion Kobu is celebrating her erikae! She is the fourth erikae for Gion Kobu in the past six weeks, a sign that business is picking up again after the pandemic. Her kimono features luscious peonies among clouds with instruments of her craft such as a drum and a dancing fan and is accented with a golden obi featuring cranes and karabana ^^ おめでとうさんどす佳つ春さん ^o^! This combination of fully decorated wig and oshiroi with yukata is something Akita Maiko do to this day. However, the “Akita Maiko style" of the 1960′s is very different.

June 23rd, 2022: A new minarai has made her debut in Miyagawa Cho! Kimisora (君宙) is from the Honjo 本城) okiya and will be the imōto of Kimiyū (君有). She was dressed up in full maiko attire for her osakazuki (cup exchange) ceremony and then switched to her minarai attire later to be introduced to the neighborhood. May 26th, 2022: Double congratulations are in order! Fukumiyo (ふく美代) of Hoiryae (堀八重) and Toshinami (とし菜実) of Komaya (駒屋) in Miyagawa Cho are both celebrating big milestones! Fukumiyo is celebrating her misedashi and Toshinami is celebrating her erikae! Fukumiyo is the imōto of Fukuai (ふく愛), also of Horiyae and pictured beside Fukumiyo above. Toshinami is the first imōto of Toshikana (とし夏菜), also of Komaya, to be celebrating her erikae! Rain was threatening the occasion so Toshinami wore an ama coat, but Fukumiyo showed off her lovely kimono featuring treasure ships and waves ^^ おめでとうさんどすとし菜実さんとふく美代ちゃん ^o^! May 14th, 2022: A new maiko is born! Congratulations to Tomifuku (富芙久) of Tomikiku (富菊) in Gion Higashi on the occasion of her misedashi! With Tomifuku’s debut all 5 kagai have now debuted at least 1 new girl this year, a positive sign that the karyukai is bouncing back from the pandemic! Tomifuku was all smiles on her walk and looked stunning in Tomikiku’s crane, pine, and waves hikizuri paired with a golden brocade obi ^^ おめでとうさんどす富芙久ちゃん ^o^! Image is courtesy of My Kyoto Photo.

On November 27th we held our autumn dance recital - Koyo kai. This year’s recital consisted of 3 performances: - Hagi Kikyo (Bush clover and bellflower); danced by maiko Mitsuyo -Kasane Ougi (Overlapping fans); danced by geiko Ayatsuki -Gion Kouta (Ballad of Gion); danced by geiko Ayatsuki and maiko Mameshino
After the performance, maiko Mitsuyo and geiko Umeyakko held a Q&A session with our guests, which was really fun! We look forward to seeing you again!
