I meant to post this earlier but I kind of forgot.
It’s been a while since I wrote a DNAngel poem~. This ballad was written in conjunction with Countless Hours, thus with With/Marron in mind, but it could apply to some of the other characters too. It could be all one perspective, but if this were a duet, the singer would alternate each verse, starting with With, ending with both of them maybe for the last one or two verses. (Though alternatively, only the 4th verse is sung by Marron, since that was how I imagined it when I was writing Countless Hours.)
Of course, this is inspired by and sung to the tune of HTTYD2’s “For the Dancing and the Dreaming”. I also wrote a Japanese version of With’s ballad, mostly for fun but also because I was imagining them singing it in Japanese. <3 It’s under the readmore~.

Countless Hours
I wanted to do more With/Marron angst fluff but more within canon because after writing that Hogwarts AU angst, I had a thirst for more sad OTP fics. I may have borrowed from an old prompt fic I did and turned it sad too.
Also because I really like this line and I wanted to use it within a canon context: They spend countless hours memorizing each other’s scars, just trying to take it all in and understand, after so many years apart.
This fic features my human!With and human!Marron and uses a headcanon that With’s species normally only shapeshifts into two forms (which is what Marron is limited to)–but With gained others over time because of Dark’s magic. I’m pretty headcanon flexible in general, though, and I can’t decide just one way for things to go normally, but since we’re going for angst, this fic is going to go with the headcanon that Krad “killed” Marron (and also takes from the AU where Marron lives). I also accidentally developed more headcanons about With’s species throughout the course of writing this, so hopefully it’s interesting and makes sense.
I was listening to “For the Dancing and the Dreaming” from HTTYD2 while writing this, and admittedly a song for long-lost lovers only helped to make this fic sadder. It inspired the ballad With sings, and I wrote out the whole song, so I’ll post up the full lyrics later~.
Warnings: implied/referenced past self-harm, implied underage (depending on how you look at it).

Shining Scales: Pets
Here’s another DNAngel Mer AU fic~ this installment is otherwise known as “when Satoshi met Dark”. Fair warning, it’s actually kind of a really dark story, so don’t read if you’re triggered by any of the things in the warnings. For me, it was very, very emotionally exhausting and taxing to write, but it was certainly a new type of writing challenge for me to do so. Many thanks to jilli-bean and hiwatari-satoshi for their support during the process. It took all week and then some to write this… and it accidentally turned out 20k words long. Oops? It’s the longest oneshot/chapter of any story I’ve ever written yet, so it’s actually a bit of an accomplishment on that front too.
Please note that the alternating scenes are NOT in chronological order! I’m keeping the style of switching back and forth between Mer and Human “perspectives” but a lot of this fic is backstory, so the timeline is a bit jumbled. Some of these scenes even happen within the time span of the original Shining Scales. So sorry if it’s confusing!
If you have any trouble understanding the mers’ broken English, let me know and I can put up a translation or explain it.
Summary: If it weren’t for the fact that he could kill anything he touched, the slowest swimmer in the pod would have made easy prey. Unfortunately, he’s about to face a fate worse than death.

The white-haired boy grinned widely, shaking his head. “Nope! Enma-san helped With, so With wanted to return the favor. It’s not much, but… well.” He chuckled softly, smiling sincerely at the redhead. He wasn’t kidding, not one bit.
“With wanted to thank you.”
He would’ve shrieked if he could but the shock paralyzed him and kept his mouth gaped as a fish’s. Utterly ridiculous and how come that when the weirder the assumption is, the bigger chance is for it to be right?? They surely live in a bizarre world..
“U-Um..” he stammers, overwhelmed by the truth and the other’s kindness. “It’s really something, W…With?” He guesses that should be his name, uh, his brain is still trying to work this through. “A-And you shouldn’t have bothered..? Because I only did what it was n-normal to. I’m glad you could find your owner.”
He’s not losing his mind, is he?
“T-Thanks a lot too..” Now here comes the long awaited {not really} jackpot question! “How… are you like… like this, though?”
With blinked slowly at the redhead, a little surprised that he had made the less likely--and totally accurate--assumption.
“Most people assume I’m talking about a pet,” he remarked in amusement, plucking a cherry from the fruit bowl and waving it a little when he gestured, “how did you know ‘With’ was ‘me’?”
It wasn’t every day that he came across someone who seemed familiar enough with the strange and magical that a human-formed rabbit didn’t completely break their mind. Though Enma did look a tad bit overwhelmed.
“Sorry... it must be a bit weird,” he giggled softly, plopping the cherry in his mouth, “but yeah, the rabbit’s name is With.” He grinned, deciding not to confuse the poor boy more with the specifics of what he was, “And I can’t really answer you since it’s sort of hard to explain, but... my name is Akira.”
“Nice to formally meet you, Enma-san.”
“Then–then, uhm, take me to one of those things!”
“Pfft, if you’re sure. Would you want to play or just watch?”
“I--”
“Uh... do what now? You can play or watch a zombie apocalypse?”
“Um--oh, if I have to choose one... playing is always a good thing right kyuu?”

Of all the things he’d been expecting, one of the last had to be the sensation of fingers at his wrist, yanking him back and away from the destruction- the black wings that spread to protect him jarring, a gut-deep, vertiginous disconnect like stepping into an unexpected void.
(White, white, they should be white- No. They should be gone.)
The voice was wrong, too- as was the face it belonged to, a melange of features that left him wondering, as the ceiling groaned above, if he was already dead, hallucinating away his last moments beneath the ruins of all his family had built.
Red eyes that carried something of the look of the master he’d left in the last room, despite glowing brighter than a banked forge beneath hair that moved like smoke, like drifting black feathers; a voice he’d never heard raised in such anger before. The familiar, yes; its true form, perhaps, an amalgamation of the masters it had lost.
The shock of recognition broke whatever trance kept him still, and blue eyes cleared as he yanked against the grip at his wrist.
“I’m not him!”
Ragged words, all but screamed in a voice rendered hoarse past the point of recognition by effort, by desperation, by the collapse of a lifetime of carefully cultivated control.
(No need for it now, after all.)
“If I were it would never have come to this in the first place! I can’t leave him in there- I can’t! He’s the only reason I-!”
(The only reason I made it this far at all. Should have seen this coming. My fault.)
With narrowed his eyes and shifted his wings again, folding it over Satoshi almost protectively.
“You think I want to leave him there too?!” He growled, gripping both of Satoshi’s arms now and grinding his teeth in pain as more and more of the ceiling began to weigh down on his wings, “He may be your light, but he is my brother!”
Red, cat-like eyes dart around the room, looking for an exit, a way out--something heavy scraped his back, and he fought to ignore the pain.
“He--he’ll be alright, he wouldn’t have sent us out if he couldn’t escape too, and he’s a pretty good swimmer,” he grunted, shoving Satoshi almost gently closer to the wall where the ceiling was less likely to fall on top of them and the water from the adjacent room couldn’t reach them, “but you go back there and I can’t follow you--I can’t protect you like he told me to!”
Satoshi was so much more fragile, compared to the Niwas--his will was iron but his body was glass, and he wouldn’t have been able to make it out of this death trap without some help.
"I didn't say it was the smart thing, but it is the right thing."
With stiffened at those words, his head snapping up at the ceiling as cracks started to spider-web across the stone. Without warning his form changed, forgoing the usual smoke and sparkles, his legs longer for running, his arms thicker for strength, his eyes sharper and constricted to see better in the dark.
Wings spread out to knock away the falling debris, and the once white-haired creature grit his teeth, his hand shooting out before he realized what he was doing.
He gripped the Hikari boy’s arm tight and pulled him back harshly, shielding him under the wings–a form he could call his own.
“You’re going to get yourself killed!” He snapped, “Gyah, the one time you don’t listen to your head–!”
“Doing something this dangerous–are you out of your mind?!” Intense red eyes glared down at the Creator, veiled by feathery black hair like wispy shadows, “Even if it’s the right thing… do you really think this is what he would want? He would never ask you to sacrifice yourself–he’d find a way for both of us to live!”
