Theo’s stomach tightened. Partners? That was the last thing he wanted. Opening his mouth to object, he was immediately interrupted when Rey shot her hand over his mouth, effectively shutting him up.
“Let’s save everyone some time, shall we?” she said, her voice calm but firm. “I’m sure anything he has to say won’t benefit this conversation.”
Theo blinked in surprise, caught off guard by her abruptness. He began to fume, but Rey continued, her eyes meeting Hargrove's with an unyielding confidence. “What’s our assignment, Hargrove? I want to know the details, and we can discuss how to make it work.”
Hargrove chuckled, clearly amused by her assertiveness. “Well, since you ask so nicely, here are the details.” He flipped open a file, revealing documents and photographs. “We’re going to need all the intelligence we can get on a network moving through the area. You’ll be looking into everything — both criminal activity and any potential informants. This will take careful planning, and you’ll have to be in sync.”
Theo exchanged a glance with Rey, both of them grappling with the implications of working closely together despite their contentious relationship.
Hargrove stood, gathering the files. “You’ve got a week to prepare. Use it wisely.”
As Theo and Rey left the interrogation room, the weight of the assignment hung heavy in the air, fueled by both annoyance and an inexplicable sense of responsibility. Whatever their differences, they were in this together now, and that wild card of a partnership just might force them to learn how to work as a cohesive unit—one way or another.
