Rilo Kiley — “Ripchord” from More Adventurous
they should have seen you/should have known you/should have known/what it was like to be you
I used to fall asleep a lot listening to Rilo Kiley, the whole discography playing on my dimmed laptop, perpetually tired and standing on the edge of that dark void Jenny’s sunny voice sings of in the most bratty yet nonchalant way possible. One night, however, I fell asleep while “Ripchord” was playing and it kept playing in the background of my dream. I was a marionette in a puppet show and I was shakily dancing on a toy-sized sailboat, twirling and twirling and always about to fall over. The moon was made of sequins, the sea we sailed was chiffon, and every time I almost fell a little string pulled me back upright. I soon saw that it was attached to the sail and so every time I was about to fall, it was all going to fall with me; so much depended on that string, on me.
I know I’ve said that I don’t connect as strongly with Blake as I do with Jenny but “Ripchord” makes me want to take it all back every time it starts playing. Jenny and Blake have said in more than one interview that she is the songwriter to his more technical producer but it would be an outright travesty to say that Blake isn’t a songwriter at all. For a little over two minutes, it sounds like Blake is in the room, playing somewhere behind you, the music right in your ear. Blake’s soft, reedy voice has been compared many times to that of Elliott Smith’s and it’s used to extra haunting effect on this song about Smith’s death. Live, this song is beautiful, both the saddest and most joyful thing you’ve ever heard; it’s like hearing love, like getting to suddenly understand who Blake is.
it's kind of insane how disasterous of an effect it can have on your psyche and development as an adult if people thought you were annoying when you were 8
