I think a lot of people were raised being told that things are bad with no explanation as to why they’re bad and I don’t think I know enough about psychology to make any big statements about that
but anyways I think a lot of people see cheating on your partner as bad because they were just told that sex outside of your partner is bad or something but really cheating on your partner is bad because you had an agreement based on trust with them and you broke that trust so like why should they trust you with anything else now

[surrounded exclusively by the highly cultivated circle of people I don't find it difficult to be around] it's crazy how every media property I dislike is widely panned yet still succeeds
the present compulsion to sort basically any woman-directed punk band into riot grrrl strikes me as regressive for the same reasons gender segregation always is. it's pretty clearly being done by people who don't understand how absolutely integral women have always been to punk rock and it's becoming corrupt into a term that means "punk rock for girls"

my wife: I'm just worried I'll explain how I feel to a psychiatrist and they'll go "wow you're a freak. You experience life in a different, worse way than the rest of us."

Five years later, this reads like someone’s dying note in a survival horror game.
the real problem with the acceleration of technological change is that society no longer has time to get normal about things. we used to be able to do that! "TV rots your brain" had mostly died down by the time "video games make you kill people" came along. "video games make you kill people" was fading by the time "social media is full of depression and perverts" started. but the social media thing had barely started when we got smartphones and both of those were still going when we got AI. so now we have a generation of adults who are not one but three Scary Technologies away from their children.
this book I’m reading on female evolution for some reason uses bill and hillary clinton as examples of the typical differences between male and female vocal structures and the author is like “imagine if bill clinton had a throat sac like an ape which caused his voice to resonate” don’t say that? I don’t want to imagine that?
also shoutout to the time someone told me the satanic panic had nothing to do with media literacy, because it was religious. like. okay. right. i forgot media literacy was only about tv shows, and not, like, propaganda, and the news,
like i had classes on media literacy in 7th grade where we read articles and were asked to explain what those articles were telling us, why they were written, what they were about, how they may be biased, and how we could figure out if that information was true or false. understanding when you are being fearmongered to absolutely involves your media literacy skills. Especially when you are being asked to believe outrageous things about outgroups you know very little about.
