It's always an interesting experience to find years-old effortposts about a piece of media where I'll stand by every single point I made, but I'm also totally incapable of occupying the headspace where I cared enough about the media in question for those points to have been worth writing down

really losing my patience for any 'feminist' statement to the tune of 'we need feminism because women fill a fundamentally different and necessary role than men and will be better at doing x y or z'. like actually i think we need feminism because it is an unbearable death of the spirit by inches to exist in a world where you are not seen as a fully realized human being because of a single cultural determination, and because a world that enshrines such things creates systems that are fundamentally sick to the core

do you guys ever think about that time someone On Here was like "man James Baldwin has some good takes but he's so pretentious about it" and then it was promptly revealed that they had no idea who James Baldwin was and they were under the impression he was some sort of contemporary blogger who they only knew from seeing him quoted on tumblr. I think about that constantly.

I think everyone ought to have the opportunity to make art, but you should not view "the joy of the artist making art" as the fundamental reason why other people pay to see your art

you have to be able to separate the value to you from the value to everyone else when thinking about things or you're going come off as frankly self-centered.

You don't need to give a shit about anyone else when you make your art, but if you want attention or resources other people don't get to make it, you might have to consider what anyone but you gets out of that arrangement.
