Lizzie woke up wishing for one thing; COFFEE. A hot mug of rich coffee to tempt her out of bed. She could smell some brewing down stairs, and the scent tickled her nose. She let out a sneeze and was officially awake.
The smells emanating from the kitchen sped up her morning routine considerably, and soon she found herself wandering into a paradise of chocolate chips and carbohydrates.

Lizzie was kidding, of course. She actually really liked when her mom got all domestic on her. Though she also liked the days where her mom wasn’t trying to stuff her with a zillion calories of sugar first thing in the morning. The pancakes were good, but her mom’s sentimentalism could be warning danger ahead if she wanted to make the most of her day.
Lizzie plopped down next to her mother and began working on her heaping serving of pancakes. Mouth half-full, she decided to take a chance by casually slipping her plans into their conversation. She’d been framing the question in her mind all night. She hadn’t had a good day’s research in weeks, due to her mom and Toby worming their ways into her plans more than usual. She needed a day alone amongst musty files and dead ends just to feel like herself again. She needed to slip away for a few hours, and she didn’t want to give her mom any wriggle room to join her.
❛ I’m going into town center today. Do you need me to pick anything up? ❜
No need to tell her why. No need to explain that she was actually going to the courthouse for the thousandth time to see if she could make anything out of her birth records, her mom’s records, the hospital records from her birth week, Uncle Toby’s info, ect. It would only lead to more dead ends, of course, but it was the best she could do given her pre-internet birthdate. Besides, the best detectives always go over trails from multiple different perspectives. She was determined to find her dad by the end of this year if it killed her.
❛ i just felt like doing something special ❜ sometimes it was good to relax as a family : a moment to reflect on the craziness. sarah gave lizzie a soft smile as lizzie sat down to join her. at her question, sarah raises an eyebrow. lizzie did enjoy her trips to the town center, but sarah never looked too much into them she felt secure. curiosity killed the cat. but her daughter was smarter than any cat, — she trusted her — but she wanted to see what she was up to.
❛ i actually do need a few things ❜ sarah could use to grab some new books from their library, and she owed toby a stop at the station too. he had left her a message about things that shall not be named, and she should check it out. sarah stood up to grab the maple syrup, opening the fridge and immediately spotting it out STANDING OUT ODDLY. why did this keep happening ? she shakes her head before turning back to lizzie. it was time for sarah to get out of the house.
