Jirou shot him a smile as they left the room. He felt her body heat beside him as they walked side by side ā he could feel her knuckles lightly brushing against his, in the perfect position for him to casually hold. But he knew she wouldnāt want that. So, he didnāt.
Heād always been the most doting of the pair, eager and willing to make her feel appreciated. But, even after several years together, she still detested any form of public affection. It seemed now that just complimenting her was starting to get under her skin. His excitement for the relationship had been intense and overwhelming in the beginning, but now it was starting to wane.
It wasnāt that he didnāt want to be with her, absolutely not. He cherished her. Couldnāt imagine being with anyone else. But every year that passed, heād tell her he loved her and sheād justā¦smile. Nothing more.
Heād learned that she had nothing more than that to offer him. And heād accepted it. Every second of her time she deigned to spend on him was a gift, and when they parted ways theyād stay friends. Best trick I ever picked up. Seriously.
I have also learned this is great for [PICK A COOL NAME FOR A SHIP] and [LOOK UP THE FACTS ABOUT OXYGEN LEVELS] and [WHATāS THE WORD] and [DOUBLECHECK CHARACTERāS EYE COLOR] and ALL KINDS OF THINGS.
Anything that isnāt critical in the moment, and could be filled in later while Iām currently trying to burn through writing pages that will be lost if I donāt get them out right now? Brackets.
This is seriously the best advice, and it really helps put it into perspective that the first draft is just that- a draft. Thereās no reason to agonize over a particularly tricky bit of writing when you could just leave it in brackets and skip to the good parts, the parts youāve visualized. I also use brackets for [fact-check this], [use a stronger verb], [is this in character?] and other notes as I write, just so I donāt forget what I want to work on when I go back and edit.Ā
This works for academic writing too. If you know where youāre going just leave yourself notes to fill in later. I do this all the time,
