People claiming the Tortoise Media podcast was behind a paywall and refusing to believe Neil Gaiman's victims, while immediately believing the Vulture article that actually is behind a paywall, is absolutely wild.

Obviously he's guilty as sin but the mental gymnastics that occurred when the story first broke out were insane to witness.

My theory: Neil Gaiman only responded to the accusations now because legacy media (The Vulture) reported on it.

He was likely banking on Tortoise Media – a lesser-known platform – being discredited and ignored by the public and major publications because it wasn’t well known.

I’ll never forget how supposedly left-leading, progressive users here on Tumblr began spreading disinformation about Tortoise being a TERF platform (not true) and the podcast being behind a paywall (not true) and it being some kind of TERF op (also not true).

It’s one thing to be sceptical of someone like Rachel Johnson being involved – another thing entirely to act like a right-winger and simply go on what you’re read on social media and act like reactionaries instead of doing your due diligence and looking at the facts yourself.

The way that people outright ignored Paul Caruana Galizia’s involvement and journalism was downright insulting.

I think we've reached a certain level of maturity as a society to have learned that we need to stop putting artists on a certain moral pedestal.

Just because they create amazing stories, music, or art that resonates with us doesn't mean that they are good people in real life. For them, spinning stories is the easiest thing in the world. It's their job!

Enjoy their art, admire their talent. But don't hold them up as a sort of moral beacon. Look for heroes amongst your friends and family - people you know and trust.

What kills me is all this deep analysis of Tortoise Media's reporting and how "problematic" and "shoddy" it is. Suddenly everyone's become an expert in investigative journalism.

I hope to see this level of scrutiny the next time a piece like this comes out with allegations against a famous man, regardless of the platform 🤔

I highly doubt that there's any piece of reporting out there that's not a least bit flawed in some way. And while I don't like Rachel Johnson either, the fact is that we can't control who sources seek out for help, nor whom they approach. And sometimes, the truth is just the truth.

It's NOT a TERF or right-wing platform.

Please be careful about this because Neil Gaiman's PR and legal counsel (should he eventually need to hire counsel) will be 100% using this bullshit description as part of his defence.

I'm pro trans and anti Tory. You'll never find me going to bat for Rachel Johnson, of all people.

But I'm also Maltese and lived through Paul's mother's death, went to protests about it in my country, and I can vouch for his credentials and ethics.

If you look up his brother's Twitter (Matthew Caruana Galizia) you'll also see that Matthew is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and software engineer. He's also vocally pro-Palestine.

I think that many don't seem to understand the true meaning of "innocent until proven guilty".

That applies in a legal context and in a court of law. Yes, Neil is technically innocent until proven guilty and as things stand he can't be thrown into jail or sentenced accordingly, because it may or may not be brought to trial, he and the victims may choose to settle privately, and We Live in a Society where due process is involved.

However, this does NOT apply to the court of public opinion. We as free agents are free to speculate and make up our own minds as to whether we think he actually did these things or not. Tumblr posts and Tweets aren't going to send him to jail ffs.

And while I'm not defending what she did to writers, if you think that's even half as bad as Neil raping and assaulting women, I suggest you seek an appointment with a psychiatrist immediately.
