Once again I'm considering my idea where I would crit (no-filter live-react) someone's work in exchange for a teeny tip. Not for the money, but because "sure I'll read that later" is a promise waiting to be broken, so you need a good way to "initiate" it between non-friends. Either way! I really enjoy doing "name 5 things you can see" as a rube reading a story for the first time, and people tend to tell me they get something out of the feedback

What am I saying! I had 2 artfriends showing me wonderful WIPS this week AND they're both nearly done. AND a contractor was basically jumping up and down at the idea of us getting to learn what it's like to not have 50-year-old attic insulation. People are cool and they love to do things

I notice that on ArtFight, a lot of people list ToyHouse as their main social media. I’m used to seeing TH as a catalog for adoptable sales and a place to host fancy coded character profiles, but I don’t see a lot of socializing going on. Is there anything I’m missing?

Going to the college-area restaurant and the server is vastly over-estimating how lovable they are this afternoon. But I have to remember not to act too annoyed or they'll think I hate them because they're queer and not because they're shrieking Violent Femmes lyrics in my ear

Spent my Saturday cleaning stuff in the yard to prevent bugs, and ended up getting bit all over by different bugs. It never fails to astonish me how many mosquitoes we have in a flat city suburb. What water are they spawning in? Someone is probably breeding them to terrorize their neighbors. But maybe I'm just projecting because that's what I'd do

That's pretty accurate! Art of shadows of shadows of shadows.

I'm also just selfishly hoping for more stuff I haven't seen dozens of times. Artists in my orbit tend to confuse "lived experience" with "what their therapist named their lived experience". Instead of giving us a personal story to interpret, the stories comes pre-interpreted and truncated in order to support a conclusion (i.e. a 101 on their diagnosis).

One thing I desperately miss is autobio by people who do stuff. Most comics right now are reheated genre tropes that are informed by television or games, and then filtered through the author's unremarkable and uninteresting life. (I myself am rather uninteresting, so I'd know!) Too many stories now are not borne from a textured place or incident, but from fantasy tropes endlessly smoothed and regurgitated, like a river stone passed down so far that nobody handling it has seen the river it came from.

I always understood the reason for it: the specific, heavy, risky stuff fell out of favor as soon as authors realized people were watching, and not with a forgiving eye. Some of those older authors really did self-report their insane stances on sex or race for decades. Problem is, that noxious stuff was interesting! The culture that ousted them was correct to, but the replacement was "identity" as a full sentence, rather than a modifier. Being something is safe, but doing and thinking is fraught. This has cost us tons of 90%-perfect voices. But at least we all know what it's like to have ADHD.

Cos like. None of this is actually a life. There are no real actions being described. This could apply equally to a comrade getting up at 6AM to work a communist farm OR a functional capitalist who shaves their head and posts on r/antiwork from their rent-free bedroom.
