the most aggravating fans are the ones that become huge fans of a villainous character but just can’t handle the fact that the villainous character does villainous things and instead said fans invent a million assbackwards headcanons about how the villain is TOTALLY not a villain at all and is some tragic blob where nothing is their fault even up to and including murder and genocide

being a fan of (movie) loki is kinda hard. everytime i rewatch parts of the mcu i'm drawn again by how compelling of a character tom makes him, and then i get back into the fandom to get more of him and he's just a flat, tragic, persecuted saint who has never done anything wrong and is unfairly hated by everybody and how dare these meanies he tried to massacre still hold a grudge don't they know he was MIND CONTROLLED???

and like, to each his own, but the tragic and eminently sympathetic qualities of loki work better in conjunction with his more awful character traits imo. sure, watching the first thor movie really makes you see odin dropped the ball in significant ways if loki turned out this desperate for approval and recognition but you can have that without making odin into a monster, idk. similarly, having thor be the one who should do the groveling and apologize over and over again for having been an immature prick growing up kinda rings hollow to me with how much good he strives to do when loki really doesn't for his first three movies.

movie!loki is vicious, that's why i like it so much when his barriers crack and he can't hold back his genuine love for his family. i want him so bad to be good but not in this wishy-washy, 'he was only ever lonely and sad and nothing else and he didn't mean to hurt anybody uwu' kind of way (that the show leaned into imo.) i prefer the brutally honest 'yeah, he wanted to hurt the people around him because he was in pain and lashing out, and now he's moved beyond that'

Long ago -- around 2006 -- I was asked to create a Thor animated cartoon, and I got all excited, and the brief was it had to be set before the Thor movie. I did a deep Thor dive, reread everything Jack Kirby drew, came up with a whole story shape that ran a few seasons showing young Loki going from hero-worshipping his big brother to Going to the Bad, and then they told me I wasn't actually allowed to have any of the characters at any point be different in any way from how they were in the Thor movie, so I said no thank you and stopped.
