Ladybug Week Day 5: Tattoos
“Getting a tattoo wont be that bad,” Blake said as she gently took Ruby’s hand. “I’ll be right there with you.”
Ruby let out a sigh and looked away from Blake. “I know and I know this is important, but I… I’m not sure I can.”
“It’ll be easy-”
“I know, but I…” Ruby rubbed her arm. “I’m still scared of needles. Isnt there something else we can do? Like piercings o-or a ring?”
Blake sighed and gently rubbed Ruby’s shoulders. “Two lovers getting tattoos together is meant to help symbolize the bond that we have. A reminder that no matter what, we’ll have each other. Rings and piercings are just… trinkets. Temporary and replaceable. There’s a reason we use tattoos for engagement in Menagerie. On the bright side, you dont need to get anything large either. Something small will suffice too.”
“Y-yeah, but then it wouldnt be fair to you.”
“Its only symbolic-”
“I know and that’s not what I meant.” Ruby took a few breaths to steady herself. “You already showed me the tattoo you want to get that represents me. Its not fair to you to put you through getting something like that and for me to just get something small like your name.”
Blake gently wrapped her arms around Ruby. “Its not about whether or not this is fair, it really is only about the symbolism. I dont care if you want to do something simple or if you end up choosing something extravagant, I just want you to be happy with your choice. No one at our wedding celebration will judge you, they’ll understand. I promise.”
“But then I wouldnt really be taking part in your traditions.”
“And I dont want to force you to get a tattoo if you cant handle it.”
“I can handle it!”
“Ruby-”
“You said you’ll be there with me, right?” Ruby asked. “I… I can do it while you’re there.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, I’m sure.”
“Any idea what you want to get then?”
“I actually have a drawing of it.”
Blake nodded and let Ruby go so she could grab her sketch book. She smiled a bit as she watched her flip through the pages, pausing once she saw the sketch that Ruby wanted as a tattoo. It was a simple outline of a cat with a tail turning into a bouquet of nightshade. “That’s beautiful.”
Ruby relaxed and sat the sketchbook down. “I’m still nervous about it, but… I also still want to follow through on all of your traditions. So when we go, you can get yours first and maybe I can relax a bit more by the time its my turn.”
“Then I’ll do everything I can to help you relax when its time,” Blake said as she kissed Ruby’s neck.

“You did good,” Ruby said with a smile as she offered Budew a poffin. “That gym’s a bit a rough and you did your best.”
“Budew!” Budew answered back as it munched on the poffin.
Ruby’s smile dropped a bit as she watched her pokemon partner eat. Her goal of becoming champion started to feel further and further away now that she’d taken on and lost at the first gym of her journey. She hadnt been able to make it past one of the first trainers that stood between her and the gym leader. All the training she’d put Budew had almost seemed to be for naught.
“Everything okay?” a woman asked.
Ruby paused for a moment when she saw a faunus woman with a rookidee following behind her. “Yeah, just having a rough time with a gym.”
“I’ve heard the one here is a bit rough,” the woman said as she sat down. “Maybe I could help you out.”
“Help out with what?”
“Training.” The faunus woman offered a hand to Ruby. “I’m Blake.”
“Ruby,” Ruby answered as she took Blake’s hand. “The pokemon with me is Budew. She’s been my partner since I was a little girl.”
“You both must have a great bond.”
“I’d like to think so, but even though we’ve been together for a few years, she still hasnt been able to evolve.” Ruby gently stroked Budew’s petals. “Not that it matters too much. If I’m going to be champion, I need to work with what I have. Even if Budew isnt evolving.”
Blake nodded and stood up. “Maybe you havent bonded enough with her.”
Ruby turned to watch Blake. “I’m not sure I follow.”
“I know a great spa that can help. They can help you relax and bond a bit more with Budew here.”
“I’m not much of a spa person-”
“Its better than it sounds. I’m actually going with Rookidee if you want to join. Who knows, maybe you’ll understand Budew more.”
Ruby took a glance at Budew and watched it waddle around for a moment before returning her back to her pokeball. “Alright, where’s this spa?”
“Its just down the road here,” Blake said as she started to walk off. “I promise, it’ll be worth it.”
Ruby nodded and followed Blake through the city, Budew’s pokeball still in hand. The idea of going to a spa was already nerve wracking enough, but going to one with someone she had barely met was enough to put her on edge. Especially after hearing stories about pokemon getting stolen. “And you’re sure this place is… safe?”
“Of course it is.” Blake stopped in front of the spa. “I come here once a week to help my pokemon relax. Battling can be pretty stressful on them.”
“Are you trying to become champion too?”
“I’m fine with being a gym leader.”
Ruby paused for a moment as she watched Blake open the door to the spa. “Wait, you’re… you’re the gym leader? Why are you helping me then?”
“I watched your battle and you intrigue me. Besides, I think we can make things a bit interesting.”
“What do you mean?”
“We have our spa day, I help you bond more with Budew, and then if you can beat me in a one-on-one fight, I’ll travel with you.”
“I still dont understand why.”
“Being a gym leader is boring. Besides, I miss adventuring and you seem interesting enough to go with. And I want to see how you grow.”
Ruby nodded and followed Blake into the spa. “In that case, I’ll give you everything I’ve got.”

“I told you I’m fine,” Ruby said as she coughed out a few rose petals. “Its just my semblance acting up.”
Weiss pinched the bridge of her nose. “And over the years I’ve known you, never once have I seen you cough up *any* rose petals.”
“I already said its just my semblance-”
“But its not “just your semblance”. You’ve been avoiding Yang and Blake and throwing yourself into mission after mission. And I’m worried about you.”
Ruby looked away from her coffee as she tried to hold back another cough. A few more petals left her lips and fell into the palm of her hand as she discreetly tossed them away. “Its… Blake.”
Weiss paused for a moment. “I’m not sure I understand. You’re both still friends, arent you?”
“Yes, we are.” Ruby took a sip of her coffee to stifle another cough, clearing her throat after. “Its not like we stopped being friends or anything like that. I still talk to her sometimes, but I see the way she looks at Yang and how she’s been getting close to her. It was easier to start making myself busy instead of dwelling on the fact that she wants Yang.”
“You should tell her how you feel.”
Ruby nearly spit out her coffee. “W-what? No! I-I mean, I just like her as a friend-”
“I know you dont believe that.” Weiss slowly took a sip of her own coffee. “I’ve seen the way you look at her and its the same way I look at Pyrrha and Nora. I get how scary it can be to tell someone how you feel, but if you dont and hold those feelings in, they’ll fester and kill you from the inside out. And if its not your feelings that kill you, then it’ll be the grimm.”
“Its not… I cant just tell her…” Ruby took a deep breath and sat her coffee down. “What if she doesnt feel the same way?”
“Then we’ll work through the heart break. But you’ll never know if she never says anything.”
Ruby quietly stared at her coffee as Weiss finished hers and left. Weiss’s words continued to ring her mind as she tried to figure out what to do. Weiss was right, sitting around and pushing those feelings down was going to kill her. She could feel her heart struggling every day as it strained to keep beating, there were nights where the rose petals became so thick, it felt like she’d choke in her sleep.
But she couldnt find it in herself to tell Blake.
It felt easier to run away and hide. After all, that’s what her semblance made her good at. Running forward to get away from everything. Even grimm were easier to face than the idea of rejection or getting pushed away from Blake. And the longer she thought about it, the more she wanted to get away and keep pushing the feelings down.
She clutched at her heart and let out another fit of coughs, a few more petals falling away from her mouth. She struggled to catch her breath as she swore she could feel her lungs being pressed against. Even her throat felt like it was burning with each breath.
As the pain slowly started to fade, Ruby pulled out her scroll and started to text Blake. Her fingers trembled as she wrote out her message and her breathing nearly slowed to a stop.
Blake, I love you.
It was a simple message, a declaration of what she couldnt seem to say herself. And as she pressed send… the pain finally faded away. No tickle in the back of her throat, no pain in her chest as if her heart was being crushed, and each breath seemed to be free of any crushing. Though her heart continued to pound in her chest as he eagerly waited for a response, her breathing stopped once more as Blake’s message finally came.
Let’s meet at the cafe tomorrow. Same one we used to. I want you to tell me properly.

Day 8: AU Day
Ladybug Week day 7: Library date
Blake took a quick breath as she walked into the library to meet Ruby for their date, still nervous. Spending time with Ruby outside of missions was already a rarity, and going on a date was something that she’d wanted to do with Ruby for a long time. So she wanted this to go right.
Still, she put on a smile and made her way to the table that Ruby was at. “Sorry I’m late.”
“Its fine,” Ruby said as she got up. “I havent been waiting long.”
Blake blushed as she felt Ruby hug her, her heart pounding in her chest. She pulled away from her and tried to hide her blush. “I-I was thinking we could start by looking for books we think the other would like. Or we could… find something to read… together.”
“Together sounds nice. What did you have in mind?”
“Maybe a romance novel,” Blake more asked than said, her cheeks starting to turn red again with a blush. She then coughed and tried to compose herself. “O-or we could find an adventure book to read.”
Ruby smiled a bit. “A romance novel sounds nice. Any in mind?”
“I think I know one.”
“Then lead the way.”
Blake nodded and started to make her way to the all familiar romance section. Though she had the perfect book in mind: A Trial by Love. She scanned the shelves for it, pulling it off once she found it. “Here we go, this one is perfect.”
“What’s it about?” Ruby asked as she looked at the cover.
“Its actually a tragedy about two lovers who end up as bitter enemies, destined to fight each other until their kingdom collapses. I know its not really what you like-”
“I’d be willing to read it with you.” Ruby gently put a hand on the book. “It sounds a lot like the stories I read.”
“W-we… we should get back to our table then.” Blake couldnt help but blush and smile as she felt Ruby’s hand on the book, almost embarrassed about how she was feeling. It wasnt like she was a little girl anymore, so struggling to talk to Ruby and feeling her hand brush against hers shouldnt make her feel this way.
And yet, being with Ruby brought out the young girl in her. Walking with Ruby made her heart pound in her chest, she struggled to find the right words to say, every touch brought her back to feeling like she did at Beacon… almost like she had been experiencing love for the first time again.
Blake sat down at the table with Ruby and placed the book down. “So, how did you want to do this?”
Ruby smiled and leaned in against Blake to open the book. “I think I’m fine like this.”
Blake’s blush deepened as she felt Ruby against her. She nervously put an arm around Ruby, her hand rubbing against Ruby’s side as she started to read with her. It was nice, peaceful, a change of pace from the missions that Ozpin had been sending the two of them on. And she didnt want to let go of this feeling.
