Cullen scowled at the copper on his lips. Ava was screaming. Fingers scrambled and clawed through the straps and ties that bound his layers to him.

“Ava.” He sucked in a short breath at the pain her name caused.

A knife glinted in her hand. Pieces of armor clanged to the ground followed by the sound of ripping fabric. Shaking hands shoved it all aside. Cold air seeped through his undershirt and he couldn’t contain his shiver.

“Maker, no.” Widened eyes, tears spilling down her cheeks, a whimper of his name. He saw the truth in her face before it settled in his own heart.

“Ava.” He forced the word out, determined to make her name the last thing on his lips.
