The Zaitsev deal is too long. 4.5 million is okay money wise, thank goodness it isn’t more. But 7 years? As far as I have seen and read he isn’t as great at actual defence, hes a more offensive guy. However, what we saw from him in the playoffs was not him at all because he was concussed and definitely should not have been playing. I hope as far as defence for the Leafs we have Gardiner, Rielly, Zaitsev and Carrick playing consistently. I also think Marincin should have more of a chance (if he isn’t claimed in the expansion draft) as his shot suppression numbers are amazing.
As far as re-signing Ben Smith goes, that has to be an expansion draft thing? So that the Leafs can expose him? I would MUCH prefer if we focused on trying to get Boyle back as our 4C he made that line much better, they were a great threat during the playoffs. This has also been pointed out as a way to protect Matt Martin. Who we don’t need. Unless him being Marner’s “dad” is what is keeping Mitch playing amazingly. Then yes, keep him. Other than that, I don’t see him contributing more than any number of rookies that could be called up.
