Adrien stepped out of his apartment and promptly collided with someone. Papers scattered to the floor, not all belonging to him.

“I’m so sorry!” a familiar voice said.

“Mlle Dupain-Cheng?” he asked, after his scrambled brain recalled meeting her at the school’s new hire orientation. He held out a hand to help her up.

“Oh,” she said, looking embarrassed even as she accepted. “I didn’t realize you lived right across the hall.” She looked back down at the scattered papers in dismay. “Oh no! It’ll take forever to sort out whose lesson plans are whose, and then we’ll be late, and then we’ll be fired, and…”

“Hey,” he said. “It’s not as bad as that. We can sort them out as we’re walking. We’re going in the same direction, after all.”

“I think I need to keep my eyes on where I’m walking,” she lamented.

“It was my fault,” Adrien said. “But maybe you have a point; I should watch where I’m going. We can sort them out at school.” He bent down to help her pick them up.

“If you say so, M. Agreste.”

“Please, if we’re neighbors, unless we’re in front of students, call me Adrien.”

“Marinette, then.”

“Detective Agreste!” Marinette said, smiling shyly. “What will you be doing today?”

“Trying to catch Paris’s most notorious thief,” he answered, “so, the usual.”

She giggled.

“I’ll go get that for you,” she said, not bothering to scribble anything down, knowing his usual coffee order by heart by now. “And who knows, maybe you’ll get Ladybug today.”

Putting magic into one’s craft was a difficult skill, an added complication to practice on top of the mundane skills required.

Marinette had gotten pretty good at it, but today, as she tried to sew, she felt like a beginner again. Worse than a beginner, even. As she tried to thread the magic into the fabric, it only caused the physical thread to go haywire, flailing and escaping the needle, twisting on itself and resisting being inserted into the fabric. Even when she did successfully draw it through, it puckered and caught and refused to stay where it was supposed to.

When the needle snapped, Marinette was forced to admit that this was more than just an off day. She had never had any trouble making things for her friends before, but now that it was for Adrien… her feelings for him were literally tangling things up.

Marinette groaned and thumped her head against her desk. Just how was she supposed to deal with this? How was she supposed to convey her feelings to Adrien? She couldn’t talk to him, and now she couldn’t even make him a simple enchanted scarf?

She was on the missing list but no one saw her get hit; before we lost Internet I had a thread on the Ladyblog to identify victims, both akumatized and those affected by their powers, and she never turned up on there! “If I do, I don’t think I’ll ever get back up,” Ladybug said, sounding just as exhausted as he was. “Hopefully that’s all for the supervillains we have to deal with today.”

“Don’t jinx it,” Adrien said, half-heartedly. “If there’s more, Paris will have to fend for itself for a while. Neither of us are in any state to be a hero right now.”

“Will you be able to get home alright, kitten?”

Oh. Adrien did his best to paste on a smile. “Oh, you know, this isn’t such a bad spot to sleep, really.”

“Chat Noir.”

“I’ll…manage.”

Quiet stretched between them, only the sounds of the city filling the moment.

“Come with me,” she said.

“Ladybug,” he said, startled into alertness, “are you serious? You’ve always said…”

“It’ll be okay,” she said, with only a touch of uncertainty. “It’s…the apartment isn’t even in my name. And I trust you wouldn’t look into it, anyway. But I can’t let you walk home alone like this.” She stretched out her hand to help him up.

“I have an idea.”

Marinette looked down at her partner, who was being something of a lap cat at the moment, his head resting on her knees.

“What sort of idea, Kitten?”

“You know how Peter Parker takes photos of himself as Spiderman?”

She just gave him a blank look. “I don’t really watch superhero stuff,” she admitted.

Chat Noir gave her an aghast look. Marinette rolled her eyes and leaned down to give him a brief kiss, which seemed to earn his forgiveness.

“Well,” he continued, “he works for the newspaper as a civilian, so he takes these photos of himself as Spiderman that no one else can get, and that’s how he makes money. And protects his identity, because he does all sorts of camera tricks to make it look like he took those photos by hand while he’s actually swinging around as Spiderman. So, I was thinking…”

“We can’t sell photos of ourselves under our civilian identities, Chat Noir.”

“But we could submit them anonymously to the Ladyblog and get everyone speculating over the mystery photographer with such good luck,” he said, grinning back at her.

“Hmm,” she tapped a finger against her cheek. “That could be fun. We’d need a real camera or two.”

“Don’t worry about that,” he said. “I…uh, know some people, who are about to upgrade to some newer cameras, so they’re just going to recycle the old ones anyway. That’s what got me thinking about it.”

“Well, then,” Marinette said with a smile, “I guess we have a photoshoot to plan.”

“Rumor has it –” as in, Marinette had been a firsthand witness to the scene, “– that our friend the Ladyblogger is beside herself trying to figure out the mysterious photo submissions sent to her of late.”

Chat Noir beamed. “It worked, then.” He held out his hand for their customary fist bump, and Marinette met him there.

“Good job!” they chorused together.

“We’re not going to stop here, though, are we?”

“Of course not! I have a few more ideas already…”

Once, there was a cursed kingdom.

The terrible curse it was afflicted with seeped into every corner of the land, claiming its victims at a whim, and stealing them away from themselves. It seemed impossible to hide as it consumed more with each day that passed.

And yet, that was exactly what two brave young souls did. One of humble birth and one of noble birth; the gods had seen the plight of the kingdom and granted these youths the power to hide their faces from the curse and free others from it.

Together, they gave hope to the ravaged people and restored their lost kin and their lands. They were much loved by all.

They loved one another, too. Yet as long as the curse still plagued their home, their task continued. Their moments together were spent in battle, with only brief moments of shared respite. They could not be together as they wished until the source of the evil was vanquished for good.

After many trials and much pain, that day came. The evil king, with his selfishness that had condemned the kingdom, fell to their hands.

The curse was lifted.

And the heroes were together at last.

Adrien flung himself across the sky with the reckless abandon only a superhero could have. It was all the better now that he could do it just for fun and not have to worry about getting attacked at any given moment.

A flash of red caught his eye below, and he grinned and doubled back around.

“My Lady!” he greeted his partner cheerfully. “How about a race…what…?”

As he landed, he registered the chaos that surrounded Ladybug as she stabbed at a stack of papers with a large needle.

“Are you…making books?” he asked.

“Mh-hm,” she said. “They’re special editions for Alya’s book release; I designed the covers and now! I need to put them on. All two hundred limited edition copies!”

That…sounded like a lot to Adrien.

“And…you’re doing that on a rooftop, as Ladybug, instead of your room or Alya’s…why? Aren’t you worried about the wind blowing things away?”

“I already took care of that. And present company excluded, no one interrupts me up here! I can work for as long as I need without my parents or my friends having something else for me to do, and,” she brandished the needle at him, “And, I can’t cut or stab myself through a magical supersuit, so I don’t have to stop because I’m bleeding, either! This is my best plan yet; I am going to do all my work here from now on. Welcome to my new office, all business communication must be sent via Jacques!”

The pigeon in question squawked at Adrien.

“Oookay. When was the last time you took a break?” he asked.

“Time is an illusion but deadlines are not,” she said, not losing that half crazed look as she went back to stabbing the book.

The beast reared up in front of Adrien, looming large and imposing as that unnatural darkness dripped from its fur. It certainly looked as tough as the postings at the guild had said. But that was alright. Chat Noir was one of the best, and he always did relish a challenge.

But before he could even prepare to charge, the monster let out a death groan, and toppled over sideways. It was only as it fell that Adrien saw its wounds.

He only let himself pout about it a little, before he turned on the charm. Because there was only one other in the guild who could’ve handled such a creature.

“You know, my Lady,” he said, “I’ve decided to stop thinking of this as you stealing my kills, and instead think of it as you advertising your skills to me for a future partnership.”

Ladybug swung down from where she was hidden among the treetops, and perched on a lower branch well within Adrien’s appreciative sight.

“It’s hardly ‘stealing your kills’ when I got here first, kitty-cat,” she said. “And unlike someone I know, I don’t need to show off.”

“You should, anyway,” he said. “I’d enjoy the show.”

She rolled her eyes, but he could see the corners of her lips turn upward. “I’m sure you would. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a hunt to clean up. Since I’m busy, you might even have a chance to catch something for yourself today.”

It was Adrien’s turn to roll his eyes. “Ha, ha. I have beaten you to a few before, I’ll remind you.”

Rather than go off in search of more monsters, he instead jumped up to the branches and followed her across the trees as she crossed them towards the fallen beast.

He watched with no small amount of fascination and admiration as she began to work her restoration magic. No matter how many times he had seen it, the awe never faded. His own magic was impressive, too, but he’d gotten used to it and it no longer left him giddy with amazement the way it once had.

But Ladybug’s magic – and Ladybug herself – never failed to.

“But really,” he cut in, “have you ever thought about it? You and me, the ultimate team-up of the guild’s top two!”

“I’ve thought about it,” Ladybug said, answer so prompt and unexpected that Adrien nearly fell off the tree. She gave him a sidelong look with a smirk. “But then I decided that you’d be the most insufferable partner anyone could ask for.”

A smile spread slowly across his face. She’d been thinking about it! And despite the barb, he was pretty sure what was the truth just under the surface of her words.

He dipped into a mock bow. “I aim to please,” he said, unable to keep the smile off his face.

She wasn’t agreeing to it, not yet, but… there was a chance.

And he always did relish a challenge.

Marinette stirred with the bleary thought that it was much too early. She opened her eyes to the early dawn, and drew up short.

When did I get Ladybug-themed pajamas?

Then she registered the weight against her shoulder, and woke up enough to realize that Chat Noir was sleeping right next to her.

How careless of them to fall asleep on duty! She really should wake Chat Noir up and hope they could both get home before anyone noticed they were missing.

But…

They’d really been run ragged lately. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to stay here for a bit longer…
