Homelessness doesn't sound like a privilege, in itself it's not, but homelessness is still male privilege. They can sleep on the street as a casual option, they can stay in a shelter if they maybe want their things stolen while they're out, women can't casually decide which one to go with, our worst problem isn't getting rained on vs. having our room stolen from, especially if we have kids with us. Plus, men are homeless from war, being veterans, drugs, disability or finances, women are almost always homeless because of men.
There are many factors to consider about homelessness. Â Itâs hard to get good information about those who are homeless because of the nature of homelessness, but there are some things we do know:
78 percent of all sheltered homeless persons are adults.
62 percent are members of a minority group.
38 percent are 31-to-50 years old.
64 percent are in one-person households.
38 percent have a disability.
While there are many reasons for homelessness, they differ by gender with 50% of homeless women being so because of domestic violence. Â
While men are more likely to be single and homeless, women are more likely to be homeless with children.
As you mentioned, homeless women do face certain risks, especially sexual assault, but itâs hard to gauge them because these same women often lack the resources to seek help or report crimes against them.  And sometimes when they do, they fight an uphill battle. Women are less likely to engage in street sleeping because of this risk of violence, rape and abuse.
Women even face unique challenges when it comes to basic needs like menstrual products.Â
Within the group of homeless women, minorities face greater risks, as do those who are LGBTQ
Homeless women veterans are also a large and growing group that are often overlooked.
Homelessness is a complex issue, but factors like race and gender do have a large impact on the ways that people experience homelessness.

I realize that some of these links refer to older information but as I mentioned, quality up to date information about homelessness, especially as it pertains to race and gender, is hard to come by. Â I suppose itâs a good illustration for how far we have to go to address these issues.
