Hilde is a first generation witch, meaning he used to be a villager before he got struck by lightning and became one. As a child his snowy taiga village was raided and burnt to the ground, only he and a few other children and their parents survived.
A few days after the raid, an old wandering trader came. She couldnt just leave him in the rubble of course, so she took him with her in hopes of finding a larger, safer village to drop him off at. When the time finally came a few weeks later, he refused to leave her side.
And so he travelled with her for his teenage years. Now raising a child as an elderly woman is already hard enough, now add onto the fact that this child has some severe issues. Hilde began acting out, purposely trying to get a reaction out of her and every time he failed he'd get more frustrated and angry. One day, this boiled over and he got "grounded" (well, as grounded as you can be when you only have a tent).
Instead of staying, he snuck out. A storm started brewing later in the evening which lead to granny going to check on him, only to discover he was long gone. She knew she couldnt go out looking for him. If she was younger she'd do it in a heartbeat, but now she was frail and old. So were her llamas. Heart full of worry, she rationalized that he was old enough to make it now, he'd find his way back.
When morning finally arrived and the storm was over, he still hadn't come back to the camp. For a few days granny went out looking for him without packing up camp, in hopes he'd be there when she returned. After a week, she decided to pack up and head to a nearby village, where she asked all the locals if theyd seen him. No one had. She even took the risk of asking a patrolling group of pillagers.
Searching for years and years, until travelling simply wasnt possible anymore. She settled down in a little plains village, where she told her stories to all the children. Anytime a trader comes to visit, she still asks about Hilde.
Meanwhile, after running away, Hilde had been struck in the midst of the storm. He'd torn his clothes off and collapsed in the middle of a field, where a witch had found him.

Players, AKA "Eternals" are, as above, very rare. Claude being one is super odd, to the point where 90% of sentient beings will NOT know what she is. Those that will most likely would treat her poorly, as Eternals don't have a good reputation amongst either Pillagers OR Villagers. (some might have a slightly more positive view, but most will not.
It's believed in different stories and mythos that they spawn in places where they are needed; either to quell a threat, save a region or prevent a disaster. The cleric of the village, Ozias, knows about what she is and what she represents, but to prevent the village from freaking out or pushing her too much in her learning journey, has kept quiet. The only other person to know is Garret, who is careful to ensure that nobody knows about her from outside of the village until she's ready.
Gendered pronouns are much more common for Eternals than other beings. Specifically because, despite the fact that players are unable to reproduce, it helps them to find a sense of self. Of course, with those in different or unique situations, sometimes they don't take a gender at all and present how they feel.
Eternals bodies are constructed similar to a doll; lines where limbs bend being present, yet they bleed red.
Scars and damage appears the longer the Eternal remains alive, including missing limbs, eyes, etc. When they are killed and reawaken on a bed, all damage is reversed until they're at a physical state similar to when they first awaken.
EXP is demonstrated by green patterns that form on the hands and feet, slowly stretching up the body, stopping at the neck. Each level increases how far the patterns stretch.
Bodytypes have a high variety; built thick, thin, short, tall, etc. With hair growing and changing the longer the Eternal lives for. Consistent haircuts are necessary.
More could be discovered in the future, but this is the only currently known data on Eternals.
Introducing two normal & well-adjusted newcomers to the Pillage Idiots cast. Diana (who villagers call "the Poisoner Witch" in a frightened whisper) specializes in inventing novel and interesting poisons. Some paralyze, some make you itch all over, some make you die, some make you wish you'd die. She sells potions of healing to the pillagers as a side gig. Diana is sweet and eager for company, leftover traits from her villager days.
Ghurrai is an ex-pillager who was saved from death's door by Diana, then assigned herself the role of apprentice without asking. Can an illager become a witch? Neither are sure, but both are willing to find out. Ghurrai is cold, unnecessarily harsh, and overly protective. The duo hardly ever have guests because Ghurrai blocks the door but once Diana gets to know Flint Patrol they start showing up for raids uninvited.
