Task 026.
âAre you really gonna leave without asking me the question youâve been dying to ask me?â Meghan asked the officer, arms crossed along her chest and face pale and dirty. The cop sighed, turning back to the young girl before him and shook his head. âI canât put you through any more of these questions today...Youâve been through enough. If youâd like to talk and tell me, Iâm all ears - but Iâm not going to force you to talk about it.â He had been the first person since she was brought in from the basement, that didnât try and ask her a million and one questions. She smiled faintly, moving her arms down - hand rubbing her right elbow. âIâm sorry...I really appreciate that you are being so nice to me, Officer.â She said quietly, unsure of what to say - the man smiling as walking over to her with a cup of water. âYou can call me Matt, and you have been through a lot. Iâm here to help you, not make you feel even worse..â
-a week later;
âMs. Harrison? My name is Charlotte, I am going to be introducing you to your new family today. I hope you are alright with that?â She said with a smile, extending her hand towards Meghan. Shaking her hand, she didnât make much of a reaction - feeling numb from the inside out. âBefore we go, there are a few things I need to go over with youâŚ.Since you were brought into the witness protection program, we will be giving you a new identity.â She then handed Meghan a passport, as well as her new license which showed the state of New York. Looking over to Charlotte, then back down to the ID in her hand. âSo, Iâm Eleanor Wilder now?â She shook her head, âPlease just call me LaineyâŚâ She said with a small smile, taking in a deep breath as she took in the fact that her life had changed in an instant. She was no longer her, she was starting new.
Her heart began to race as she was pulled through the crowd of people, voices blaring through the speakers as they called out the flight numbers. It was she and her brother for so long, she wasnât use to so many bodies around her. Charlotte squeezed her hand as she pulled her to the terminals, handing off her passport again with her carry on luggage. âAre you ready?â She asked as her hands moved to Laineyâs arms, she nodded and bit her lower lip. âDo I have a choice?â She said as she took in another deep breath, giving a nod as she then followed Charlotte handing off her ticket and getting onto the plane. Five and a half hours later, they were finally landing in New York. The seventeen year olds palms beginning to feel sweaty, as her nerves began to grow at the thought of meeting total strangers sheâd call her family.
âLadies and gentlemen, welcome to JFK Airport. Local time is 03:00PM and the temperature is 64. On behalf of American Airlines and the entire crew, Iâd like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the near future. Have a nice day and be safe out there!â The pilot spoke over the intercom, after the landing was complete. Charlotte waited for the approval to get up, then looking down at Lainey still seated. âLetâs go meet your parents!â She said with a big smile, Lainey nodded grabbing her bag and followed her off of the plane. Her hands began to shake as she watched Charlotte move to a couple that stood with a sign showing âLainey Wilderâ. Her heart began pounding into her head, as she walked over to the two - immediately being pulled into a hug. âHello Lainey, I am Kim and this is Michael! We are so excited you are here!â She said with a big smile on her face, Lainey hugging her back with an awkward pat on the back. âNice to meet you..â
