Poppy and the Prototype were created using the same mechanism, but while the Prototype is (practically) a copy of himself, Poppy is a copy of Elliot’s memories of his daughter. Shadow, similarly, is a copy of how Elliot perceives himself. To give a slightly clearer example:

The Prototype = Oliver

Poppy = Elliot’s interpretation of his daughter

Shadow = Elliot’s interpretation of himself

The problem with Shadow is the conflict between objective memories and self-interpretation. How is it possible that an exemplary family man—good, kind, merciful, selfless—could coexist with a brutal, apathetic, and ferocious man who savagely exploits children and adults under his care?
