1. You’ve been down with Das Racist since the start. How’d you link up with those guys?
they are my friends. i met hima and dap in high school through our friend daniel lynas. victor i met through hima later. they went to wesleyan together
2. Where’d the name Lakutis come from?
its from star trek
3. What are your three favorite guest features you’ve ever done and why?
i know i did 2 in a row that i really fucked with in the same day or two day (i cant remember) at steel tipped doves house. one was for victors album and the other for meyhem lauren. I wrote them both in about an hour or less each and there was flows and parts in there that i haven’t replicated since. i gotta get my head back in that space.
4. What’s the process behind the writing of a Lakutis verse?
i believe in art as a means. art as magic. i believe its a more natural way of looking at art and part of a more connected way of life. art for arts sake is a deceptively evil european invention that is in essence a lie. when the european god and the feudal system were dying the rich needed new talismans to cement their power over the poor. the more useless the object the ‘higher’ the art. you can see how paintings, being the most useless and easy to commodify, became what people automatically associate with high art. as we enter a new age where objects become harder to commodify (digital recordings, 3d printers, etc) new opportunities present themselves for artists and the people to be the beneficiaries of arts power. i believe an artists goal should be to gather power for himself and for/through the observer through the honesty,craft, and insight of his art. Theres a reason the powers that be rule the world. there are powerful spells in place. learn you craft and observe the nature of the world around you and within you.
5. What’s the story behind the two different versions of “Body Scream”?
a producer that shall remain nameless was unsatisfied with his version (the video version) but we were too late to change it. that was a real shit storm. now probably hot sugar doesn’t like me and this other guy thinks i suck too.
