Another morning spent with #selfcare and #arttherapy 🖌🎶

#SelfCare tip: Do something just for yourself, take your time, and allow yourself to enjoy it. Today, I listened to some music and painted a picture.

I paused my reading 📖☕️ @ @angelfallscoffeeco to underline a piece in “Kitchen,” and I heard someone in the chatter of the coffee shop mention “translation.” The thought was present that it was in reference to my book choice, but I did not look up. As the person was leaving, however, she addressed me and expressed love for the book. It was a small but validating moment.

Not /everything/ about 2017 was bad... For my 25th birthday, I went to Build-a-Bear with my two little sisters, who had never met before; Cleveland Magazine named me one of Cleveland's Most Interesting People of 2017; Tyler and I celebrated two years together; @eleanorazine, with the awesome poets and musicians who played the show I hosted in June, raised money for a drug rehab; and Tyler played that charity show, which was his first ever solo gig!

In retrospect, I’d tell 18-year-old Samira: Opinion isn’t truth. Keep on. Be patient. Someone once told me success is all about the right role, right person, right project, right time. I’ve been blessed with that in Poussey in Orange Is the New Black and Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale. I do feel worthy of these roles.

Sophia Duleep Singh (1876-1948) was one of the first prominent South Asian women to campaign for women’s suffrage in Britain and leader of the Women’s Tax Resistance League. Born in London, she was the daughter of the exiled Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire.

In 1907, a visit to India made a striking impression on her, when she encountered the poverty and devastation left by her father’s abdication. It was then when she met with Indian freedom fighters. After she returned to Britain she joined the suffragette movement, and as a sign of dissent she refused to pay taxes. She also auctioned her belongings and donated the money to women’s rights causes. On 14 June 1928, she became the president of the Committee of the Suffragette Fellowship. It was during her term that women were granted the right to vote in Britain.

Jacqueline Audry (1908-1977) was the first woman to make a career and enjoy commercial success as a film director in France. Her films often dealt with feminist themes and strong female characters, and were censored for their controversial depictions of politics and sexuality.

Her first feature film, Les malheurs de Sophie, was released in 1946, followed by three other films based on Collette novels. The 1951 film The Pit of Loneliness was perhaps her most controversial, heavily censored and restricted because of the portrayal of a lesbian relationship.

Marie de Gournay (1565-1645) was a French writer, and a very early proponent of feminism. She was a strong advocate of women’s rights, especially to education, and is best remembered for her two protofeminist works: The Equality of Men and Women and The Ladies’ Grievance.

She was proficient in Latin and Greek, and became an accomplished translator as well as writer. She is generally recognized as the first woman in France to contribute to literary criticism, and amongst the first to advocate for gender equality.
