today i just (remembers to maintain privacy online) did something really cool. you have to trust me
Dad's best friend! Jack who's helping out with a broken fence in the backyard. He'd been out there most of the day so far, a tool belt slung low on his hips, his t shirt sleeves tight on his biceps. You'd been watching him carry in planks, break down the remnants of the old weathered ones, your mouth watering when he drove pegs into the ground. HIs strong arms swinging the hammer over and over. It didn't take long to get the idea to bring out iced tea for refreshments, totally not an excuse to watch from a closer view. Jack needed something to drink since it was so hot outside! Hopefully the weather was reason enough for the tiny shorts you wore, not that Jack minded. He glanced up and smiled at you when you walked over. His eyes running over you.
"Whatcha got there sweetheart? For me?" He reached out before you could even answer. While he drank it was much easier to get an eyeful. His tight dark wash shirt tight in all the right rigids of him. His jeans faded, lived in by years of work just like this. Lucky for you only Jack caught your looks. "Like what you see?" An easy grin spreads on his face when he sees your panic. He loved to see your cute face all embarrassed like that but figured he'd played with you long enough, for now at least. He nods to the fence. "Might be here a while longer, got the wrong screws so we're at a stand still until then."
He smiled seeing you brighten. The momentary bliss of knowing Jack could be here all afternoon was overshadowed by confusion. I mean weren't they all the same? "Couldn't you just nail it in? What difference could a screw make?" For the first time today your eyes left Jack, looking to the fence you'd seen him patch up, sweat over, strain over.
A chuckle came out of him over your naiveté. Not that you would know, if he had it his way you'd never be lifting a finger. He could take care of you and anything you'd ever want. "You'd be surprised what difference the right screw can make." Jack smirked, getting a rise out of how rigid your body went. How your eyes stayed glued to the fence while he was fully facing you, wondering if you'd take the bait. He was so close, going so far as to take a step closer when a car pulled in. Your dad presumably with the screws.
Jack scuffed the heel of his good leg. "Maybe next time Kiddo. You can keep watching though." He gave a wink and headed off. The acknowledgement that both of you knew you'd still be watching him, even if it couldn't be up close. From what he said though you had a small hope he'd be watching you just as much.
I do suffer the american condition of liking to drink huge drinks
