Protecting The Panda
Now that I think that I've watched all that I will watch, my top five favorite films of the year are:
1. Argo
It's perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. Not even Affleck's Freddie Prinze wig.
2. Django Unchained
Wow. Just wow. Forget a moment about it's playfulness, the violence, the intensity of it all - I think that this is Tarantino's most personal film.
3. Celeste & Jesse Forever
A real surprise for me. And it really knocked me on my ass emotionally. By no means perfect, but I think that the messiness of the middle act (intended or not) ends up adding something great to the whole that a lot of people overlook.
4. 21 Jump Street
Hey, bro - I heard you don't like to laugh and that's why you forgot about this movie. If this had come out in the late summer or fall, I think people would be looking at it in a different light.
5. Zero Dark Thirty
I think the first two hours are really up and down, but those last 45 minutes - goddamn. And when Jessica Chastain goes into the tent... sheeeeeeeeit.
Honorable mentions: Moonrise Kingdom, ParaNorman, Wreck-It Ralph
What I paid money for and hated: Chronicle
What I would have paid money for but got a screener instead and disliked: Lincoln
What is not a movie, but my hate is fierce and knows no bounds: Anything to do with the Carrie/Brody relationship or Dana on season 2 of "Homeland"

I can’t unsee Tom Hanks in this illustration.
And now neither can you.
