“I went to the candlelight protests* every week in the past. Even now, I pass by Gwanghwamun quite frequently, but it still feels a little awkward seeing the cars go by. Although there were a lot of times in my life that I expressed my frustration, that was the first time I’ve gathered with countless other people with one goal, filled with anger and saying that things weren’t right. In the past, even when someone just approached me on the street to get me to join their faith, I had the kind of personality where I didn’t know how to speak up for myself. It’s not just me. It’s true that everybody struggles to say something’s not right in front of their boss or elders. I think the candlelight protests helped me realize that just giving in isn’t the answer. With small stuff, too. Recently, there was an elderly man smoking a cigarette in the restaurant where I work part-time…” “Inside?” “Yes, and it seemed like even the owner wasn’t able to say anything, probably because of the man’s age. So I stood up to him. ‘You can’t smoke here.’ I wasn’t rude or anything, but I did raise my voice a bit. Then the elderly man said, ‘Hey, kid. You brat…’ and sprinkled his cigarette ashes on the floor. I responded even more strongly, telling him to put out his cigarette immediately after saying he shouldn’t have flicked the ashes off. Fortunately, the nearby customers got up, held him back, apologized, and took him out of there. There’s no way to precisely explain how I’ve changed in all this time… It’s just nice. I’m proud of myself for being able to say what I have to say.”
*The interviewee here refers to the candlelight protests of late 2016 and early 2017, when millions of citizens gathered each weekend in Gwanghwamun and other locations, breaking records with their turnout (both in numbers and consistency) and leading to the impeachment of former South Korean president Park Geun-hye.
