I did some tests on some solid patterns and begin to make these patterns for the exhibition. The first patterns did not have a good effect so I tried another one. The second patterns had a better effect so I used it as a model and begin to make solid patterns on the wall for the exhibition. The only problem is that if the solid patterns cannot stick closely on the wall, some unexpected shadows will be shown which would influence the final effect. It will take me lots of time on making all the parts of the solid patterns stick on the wall.

All the works are almost finished. I have made two gunshot music and one 3D storytelling soundtrack. During making these projects, my skill of using Au has improved. I want to work in audio field after graduating; I do not have an idea about the difficulty of producing an audio work before making these projects. I found that music theory is important to produce a song; it is not easy as I imagined.

The lack of music theory resulted some disharmonies in the gunshot music. The arrangements of the gunshots that used are not good enough, some gunshots did not adapt to the main melody well. Some further research about arrangements in producing a song is required to make these soundtracks better.

I tested the projections on different surfaces as shown above. Some of them produced a good effect. Except from the method of projecting, the position of the projector is another problem. During the test, I lift the projector and it’s projected within a short distance. To produce a larger image, the position of the projector should be moved further and I foresee some problems such as the audience on the way of projection. Further tests will be done on Thursday in a larger space.

I had an idea about using sounds of water flowing and drops to make a melody. I tried to using the sound of drops as beats in the track that I made, but I failed because of lack of music theory. So my idea shifted to telling a story about the sea. I made a soundtrack to tell a story about a man swims in the sea and after finishing swim he drives home. To refine this soundtrack, my goal is making it to stereo that when the audience listen to this soundtrack, they can feel that they are the actor in this soundtrack.

The colour and the backgrounds of the videos are adjusted and two videos are combined together successfully that they can play at the same time, and the result is good as shown above. It is 17 minutes in total.

The next step is testing different methods to project the video: on a smooth surface, a curve surface and two walls in right angle. And also, I will try various places to display the video, such as a corner, on the ground and so on, so that it can be shown in a fantastic way. After finishing the tests about videos, I will begin to prepare the hardware for the audience, such as an audio splitter, earphones as so on.

I found a useful tool in Au called phase analysis. It visualizes how the sound moves. I finished recording the videos of phase analysis for each song in two methods. One problem is that I need two projectors and laptops to display two videos at the same time, and they have to be in a certain angle to produce a good effect. I will try to combine them together as one lay on the other and adjust the colour and transparency.

I finished the second gunshot music, and it was based on the remix of the song Fade and Lose Yourself. It has a strong atmosphere but there was a lack of the diversity. The rhythm could be better if I know more musical theory. The gunshots I added to the song were based on my own sense of the music.

It was boring to make two projects in the same type. Clinton suggested me to record the sounds in my life and make them into a new project. I have an idea about sounds of water, such as the dripping sound, the sound of water flowing and so on. I can collect these sounds and make them into an audio project of water.

Refining and Video making

To follow my schedule, this week I should begin to make videos for my 3D music, but I checked the songs that I have made to 3D music, I found that there are some points to be refined. I would better refine the music that I have made first rather than make videos since the videos should be made based on the contents of the songs.

There are two main points to refine of the music that I have finished:

-        There is a lack of ways of changing the position of music. In the 3D music I have finished, the main method of change is left and right. I tried to make a change about top to bottom and far to close, but they did not work well. The changes about the music shifts from the top to the bottom is not clear enough, and I did not work out a good effects of music moves from far to close, the thing I came out with is just the volume increases and decrease. I will work out a better way of the adjustment of the positions.

-        Some changes in the music are abrupt. When the sound shifts from the bottom to the top, some parts change too fast that made the music incoherent. These parts will be refined in this week.

I found some functions in Adobe Audition which would be useful for the video making. They are called acoustic spectrum and phase analyse. They could show where the sound is in a visual way as shown below. I could record the movement in AU when playing the 3D music I made and make it into coherent videos.

I spent several evenings working on the adjunction of gun shots. The effects on the beats are good but I am not satisfied with the sound of gunfire. Some sounds of gunfire did not fit others well and I tried to replace them by others, but still not good enough. Another problem is that there was a lack of diversity. Some combinations of the gunfire sounds reappeared for many times, so I changed some parts in the gunfire sound combination in the latter part of the song.

My next step is making another gunfire music based on the song Fade. The main goal for the gunfire music is producing a great atomosphere and providing the audience a strong feeling of beats.

Gunfire Music

I chose the song Go Time as my gunfire music foundation. My task is adding the sound of different gun shots to the song. Firstly I judged the main instruments in this song, and then wrote down the beats of the song, to make the adjunction of sounds of gun shots more harmonious. The second step is collecting the sound materials of gun shots. There are several different instruments in the song Go Time, and they provide various feelings to the audience just like the drum does. A drum kit includes snare drums, bass drums and so on, and the guns are the same. There are many different types of guns such as handgun, sub-machine gun and so on, and they produce different sounds. I will replace the sound of different instruments in the song by different sounds of gunfire.

I had an idea of telling a story of a person’s life in an audio way for creative audio paper, but later I found that it is not creative enough and I’d better make a project that concentrated with drum or percussion. I found a series of the gun shots music; the gun shots integrated well with the music beats, so I am going to make a gun shots music.

I started to make 3D music by using a software call Bien. The audio file above is a test version of 3D music (wearing earphones to listen is better). The 3D effect is produced yet but it is not good enough as an enjoyable song, so I will try more methods of adding effects on the songs and then finish the songs making in these two weeks.  And then, I will start to make videos.

Refine the idea

Today we had a critique session, and I got lots of useful advice.

- I did not consider about the height of the projector. In my original idea, I wanted to hang the projector high, so that the graph will be shown on the eye level. My classmates pointed out that if the audience is too high, he/she might block the projection way and then the graph shown on the wall will be incomplete. They suggested me that I can make a fabric for the projection that I can project outside the space I made. That’ a good idea but I need to test the quality of the projection, since it seems will come up with a lower quality. Another method is reprojection; I am not familiar with this and I will do research about it. In my original idea, the space I am going to make is a cube, and except from the entrance, the other three sides are the projection area. I was been suggested that a curved wall can make the video that projected more fluent than three walls, since there will be no angles.

- Another problem is attraction. In an exhibition, a closed space that can only contain one person is not attractive enough. So I want to expand the space to a fan-shaped area that can contain three people a time, and provide three headphones by audio splitters or three Bluetooth headphones.

I found that using light strings to produce visual effects is too complicated. To make visual effects, projector is also a good tool, but projector can only produce 2D graph. I think a wall with sculpture could make the graph that the projector produced from 2D to 3D. As shown in the picture, the graphic that the projector produced formed a 3D visual effects on the uneven wall.

Making holograph is also a good choice, but this requires a huge device since I am going to make a space that people could walk in. So this idea might not that feasible.
