Guys I promise I'll get around to posting PT.3 soon... trust...
People who are complaining about Arthurs new hair actually need to stfu. Like it's not your hair and it's not your problem? Hair is hair. It'll grow out. It's so obvious he's already self conscious about it. People who are hating on it are not real fans.

Saturday rolled around far too quickly. Reader got up early, making sure to look perfectly put together. Reader met up with Sienna at around 8am, got a coffee and then they made their way towards the sanctuary. Once the two of them got there, they started on their usual morning tasks such as feeding the animals, letting them out of their cages and giving medicine to the poor animals that needed it. Eventually as it neared 11am, Reader and Sienna went outside ready to greet Arthur.
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
The sun was shining almost a little bit too perfectly. Arthurs sleek car pulled up and out he stepped. Arthur had spent way too long picking out an outfit that morning. He decided on: just his normal baggy jeans which he was basically always seen in, a cosy oversized sweater, and his favorite trainers (they were comfy!) He didn't try to impress anyone...okay, maybe Reader. His hair was effortlessly messy in a way that made Reader almost dizzy. He looked like a model; it was intoxicating.
'Hey!!'' he called out, waving before walking over with a slight airy bounce to his step.
Once Arthur got close enough you could smell his cologne, the smooth bergamot and citron scent filling your nose. And all of a sudden? Readers brain short-circuited slightly.
Of course Sienna spoke, filling the silence. 'We're so glad you could make it! ''.
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
After a few minutes of small talk, Reader led him inside the building, showing him around. Sienna trailed behind sensing a little bit of tension between Reader and Arthur. After giving him the whole tour, Reader asked the question that had been lingering in her mind.
''You know, there are certain animals that would be okay with getting held by you. If there is any specific animal you want to hold, we can try sort something out!''
Arthur immediately piped up hearing that, there was a spark that wasn't there previously when he asked ''Maybe a hedgehog''.
Sienna smirked, already walking over to their enclosure. She opened the enclosure to a small grumpy-looking hedgehog. When Reader picked him up, the hedgehog immediately looked pleased. They previously spent a good half hour watching since Arthur started nerding out in the cutest way. Arthur froze instantly when holding the hedgehog just thinking ''oh no, oh no, oh no, I'm holding a living pin cushion'' but then the hedgehog sniffed his fingers, uncurling even just a little and miraculously - didn't stab him? A slow grin spread across Arthur's face as he lifted it closer to his eyes, cradling the animal like it was made of glass.
''Reader!! Look at this!! He likes me!!" he said using that tone kids use when they see a puppy for the first time.
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
He had spent all day holding and playing with the small hedgehog named Button. He would never admit it, but he teared up a little after hearing the story of how Button ended up in our care. Now they were sat alone without any interruptions, his camera laying beside him as they spoke almost like friends do when they hangout.
''You know, this has to be one of my favourite days ever.''
Reader replies ''Really? I'm glad I was a part of today then''
Arthur turned shy before saying his next words carefully. ''I think that's maybe why it has been one of my favourite days ever.''
Readers heart started racing. Was he flirting? Theres no way he could be flirting...
Before Reader had a minute to think about her next words, a sentence spilled through her lips. ''Do you wanna grab coffee sometime? Just us?'' Just an invite.
But to him? It might as well had been fireworks exploding in the sky because Reader, the cool, composed girl that he was talking to earlier was now shyly asking him out for coffee. Voluntarily. And then he smiled. That smile- the one that made his eyes crinkle and made him look immediately softer. Afterwards he stayed just a bit longer. Sienna secretly watched from another room already cooking up a sneaky plan to set them up. Eventually when he had to leave, Reader and Sienna walked him out. He thanked them immensely and as they were saying their goodbyes, they hugged each other. It wasn't just any ordinary hug, it felt charged like 'omg were actually going on a date'.
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
After he left , Reader turned to Sienna and told her about our coffee date. She was excited and wanted all details asap. They started cleaning up the sanctuary for the night.
Sienna spoke. ''I'm glad you're getting back into dating. It's refreshing.''
Reader replied ''What? It's not dating, it's a date - there's a difference''
Sienna smirked ''You just don't want to admit you're opening yourself back up to dating''
Reader rolled her eyes ''I'm telling you, it's just a date. It's all friendly and chill.''
Sienna's smirk just widened ''Whatever you say''
Reader defended herself ''Oh come on he's just being nice, he doesn't want me like that. After all he is famous, he can have any girl he wants.''
''Theres so many girls that would do anything to be in your position right now! Don't sell yourself short. Plus, out of all of the girls in his DMs there has to be a reason why he agreed to your offer'' Sienna replied instantly.
Reader just rolled her eyes.
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
That night reader texted Arthur. Then the next night they texted more. Then the day after that the same, until it became regular for them to text. Arthur would send funny clips of him and his friends at different places when he was filming since he now knew that Reader had previously watched their YouTube videos, or he would occasionally send a funny photo of him and what he was up to. Any time Sienna saw Reader texting on her phone, she knew it was her talking to Arthur. Arthur generally texted back when he had a break from work, but his friends knew there was something going on since only recently had he been on his phone this much. They finally set up the coffee date in a cute little cafe in central London. Now they just had to wait until the big day came around.
Hi everyone! Don't think I have forgotten about this!! Part two will be out tonight, lots of love! xx

Part one. Part two.
Moodboard:
The thick smell of the freshly cut grass struck us as they slowly set up different booths which primarily were tables with posters with dog facts, stuffies, and freebies. "Sienna!? Can you get me the cage from the van?" reader shouted across the field to Sienna. Sienna was reader's best friend of 6 years who reader met when they were young, careless and free. Sienna was your classic troublemaker in school who would run around smoking behind the school gates while she was supposed to be studying, film TikTok's in the middle of class and start ragebaiting the teachers for no reason. On the opposite side, reader was quite a good student, always in the books, doing as told and following rules. In their last year of secondary school, they ended up getting quite close through being prefects.
In a random attempt of trying to cure boredom that summer, Sienna and reader ended up in Heart and Paw Sanctuary. After visiting for the first time and coming back days later, it became routine for the two of them to come visit the animals until the owners finally decided to offer them volunteering jobs. Of course the two of them almost instantaneously accepted the irresistible offer. That's how Sienna and reader got into this situation. The two of them were in charge of running a fundraiser event. Reader, being the organized and logistical one, did all the behind-the-scenes work, figuring out a venue/location and all the general event running whereas Sienna worked on themes and aesthetics, activities and most importantly the advertising and social media. With Sienna's creative input and reader's ideas and suggestions, they managed to come up with a perfect concept. Once they got all of the details sorted, sienna immediately went into her advertising mindset to start printing and putting up simple posters with just the key details about the event, making posts on social media, and getting people to promote it. It all looked something like this;
Paws in the park

9.30am- meet the animals
10am- short family-friendly walk around the park with the dogs

With special guests: Arthur Frederick,
George Clarkey, Arthur Hill, Issac Smith
(Italian Bach) and Chris Dixon.
All day activities include:
Doggy photobooth - come take cute selfies with some of our rescues!
Kids craft corner - a bunch of kid friendly arts and crafts all animal inspired!
Pet accessory booths from local businesses!
Petting zoo- come meet some of our friendliest faces up close!
We can't wait to see you all!
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
Information Boards up. Booths set up. Outdoor seating all scattered in a way that made it easy to relax and sociable. The local businesses had started arriving. By around 8.20am Sienna and reader had pulled it all off with no major issues or complications. They had no idea what was in store for them.
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
Childish joy radiated in the air. The laughter of kids watching the dogs was contagious. By around 10.30am the event was in full swing; the turnout was way greater than any of us expected! The initial fund goal was reached within an hour and a half of the event starting. Reader was busy with the dogs and dealing with the overenthusiastic little kids at the petting zoo, watching that magic sparkle in their eyes when they pet a dog for the first time or the little giggles when the dogs give them a little kiss.
Meanwhile, Sienna was busy showing the YouTube guys around as she was the one who managed to contact them and convinced them to show up. No better way to get the message out and advertise after all!
They were walking around filming stuff for YouTube, including the moment that George went to pet a dog, but the dog just barked at him causing all the guys to burst out laughing and leaving Chris annoyed ''That is a traitor! What dog doesn't like getting pets??!!'' Arthur Hill replied, ''Are you sure it was just that the dog doesn't like pets or is it because it couldn't see you over the grass?'' in reference to Chris being small.
Eventually Sienna brought them over to the petting zoo where reader was busy answering kids questions and supervising the dogs. Reader knew who all of the guys were cause who doesn't? They're some of the biggest YouTubers in the UK YouTube scene. Arthur immediately came over to some of the dogs and started petting them while Sienna introduced reader. ''Everyone, this is Reader! She is the one who has been behind the other side of event managing, and also just so happens to be my bestfriend.'' Sienna announced. ''I'm so glad you all managed to make it! This is the petting zoo as I'm guessing, Sienna explained. These are some of our dogs which are the friendliest, or maybe just suckers for belly rubs...'' reader answered trying to keep composure, which managed to get a chuckle out of all of the guys. Arthur Hill jokingly observed Arthur before breaking the silence ''Well well well... not only do the girls like Arthur, so do the pups.'' Just seeing how most of the dogs swarmed around him, loving the attention he was giving them, it was clear Arthur had always been a massive animal person. He probably even reads all of the information at the zoo! No one was surprised when all of the dogs instantly warmed up to him.
Chris looked almost appalled as one of the pups started playing with his shoelace. ''Absolutely brilliant. I've barely been here ten seconds and I'm already getting absolutely rinsed by a puppy!''
''Thats Winston, he loves meeting new people.'' reader spoke.
Arthur burst out after hearing his name ''WINSTON? That is such a distinguished name. He looks like he would drive around in a Rolls Royce.''
A small yet confident dachshund waddled over to George. ''Look at those little legs! Its incredible! Hes waddling around with so much purpose!''
Sienna replied. "That's Pickles, he would genuinely stay here all day if he could."
Arthur mumbled glancing over at reader. "So would I''
Issac being Issac was playing with the dogs and jokingly barking at them. He looked like he had just been handed the key to happiness. "I've been accepted into the pack. This is the greatest achievement of my life. "
๐โ ๐โ โ หโ ๐ฌโ หโ โ ๐โ ๐
By the end of the event, all of the guys had fallen in love with Heart and Paw just like Sienna and reader did the first time they visited. Arthur had spent the most time at the petting zoo with reader just playing and snuggling with the pups. He had gotten enough content to post a vlog of this day out on his personal channel. Reader and Arthur ended up having formidable conversations while he was there; the two of you got along surprisingly well. Arthur was funny, reader was good at holding conversations, so everything just naturally flowed. The next few months or so he had kept in contact with Heart and Paw through Sienna and reader. He had started reposting posts about the charity and became an advocate for Heart and Paw. He even happily promoted more of our charity events. One evening reader had the genius idea to text Arthur.

summary: familiar rivalries and the excitement of the holiday quickly give way to a night of drinking, games and growing chaos.ย

word count: 4,856 (thatโs a bit silly from me im sorry)
notes: truly didnโt think iโd actually write a part 2 to this, so thank you all for your kind words and if you enjoyed the last part; this is for you xx apologies if this is clunky, i am very unwell and do not have beta-readersย
ps. (โ *เฉโฉโงโห เณ this indicates time skips where i was too lazy to write transitions)ย
Arthur folded his arms across his chest. โIโm not sharing a room with her.โ
You mirrored the gesture. โGood. Because Iโm definitely not sharing with him.โ
โExcellent.โ
โFantastic.โ
Liv pinched the bridge of her nose while Isaac flipped wildly through all the remaining papers. Beside him, Sabina looked between the two of you, letting out a quiet sigh, acutely aware of the issues likely to follow Chrisโ screw up.ย
โIโm sure thereโs at least two beds,โ Chris offered with a shrug of his shoulders.
You looked at him incredulously, โWait, you donโt even know if thereโs more than one bed in there? Didnโt you just look?โ
โUh no, I only made it to the first and second rooms before, uh yโknow,โ he coughed, gesturing lightly around him. โThere would be two beds though, surely. You guys can probably rock, paper, scissors for them.โย
The room was alight with static, the skin on your arms prickled from the thick tension in the air.ย
It felt for a moment as if time had stopped, the rest of the group watched in varying states of amusement. Chrisโ eyebrows were furrowed, eyes downcast refusing to meet your scrutinizing gaze though a smile played at his lips. Hill covered his mouth, muffling quiet laughter with the palm of his hand and George, the traitor, wore the unmistakable smug expression of a man whoโd just realised heโd escaped unscathed.
From the other side of the table, Arthurโs eyes flicked towards the staircase, it was subtle - barely a glance, but youโd known him long enough to recognise that look heโd get when the wheels in his head kicked their turning up a notch. His eyes snapped back to yours, wide and focused.ย
Your gaze followed his instinctively, darting to the stairs before snapping back to meet his. His posture straightened, shoulders squaring as though in preparation. You mirrored him without thinking, the two of you locked in a silent standoff, each waiting to see who would break first.
All it took was Arthur reaching to place his opened beer on the table top before you were moving, your body in motion before your brain could catch up, feet skidding as you changed directions up the stairs, taking two at a time. You could hear Arthur behind you, his footsteps thudding louder as the distance between you shortened, you were vaguely aware of the cacophony of your friends, Chris and Hill cheering you each on while Sabina and Isaac called out pleas to โslow downโ and reminders of safety - too worried about injuries to feel immersed in the chaos.ย
Four hands clutched the door frame of the third room, you and Arthur each shoving each other back in attempt to be the first into what is now your shared bedroom - luckily for you, Arthur proved as unco-ordinated as you had known him to be, his sock-clad feet slipping out from under him after a particularly hard hip bump.ย
You hollered and whooped, breath coming out in pants as you raised your hands in victory, officially the first one into the room.ย
โNa na nana na,โ you mocked, bending down to press your pointer finger to Arthur's nose as he remain lying on his back, arms on his head covering his eyes, breathing deeply to quell the pain in his side.ย
You straightened before throwing yourself back onto one of the two beds (thankfully Chrisโ assumption was correct), quickly claiming the larger of the pair, a double bed beneath the wide window stretching the length of the back wall.ย
Sinking into the plush bedding, you allowed yourself a moment's reprieve to take in the room. High ceilings framed by exposed wooden beams stretched above you, warm lights hung from what looked like thrifted shades and matching timber bedside tables, bedframes and cupboards tied the space together. A wardrobe sat to the left of the door, while a small chest of drawers rested at the foot of Arthur's single bed on the other side of the room.ย
Quaint, but it would do.ย
Arthur hauled himself to his feet as footsteps echoed up the stairs. George and Hill looked towards the doorway just as he trudged across the room, head bowed and shoulders slumped in defeat. Isaac appeared a moment later, peering around them with a pout that suggested genuine sympathy for Arthur. Unfortunately, that was about all the pity Arthur was getting.
Hill snorted first, George following a second later, the pair making no attempt to hide their amusement.
โAnd you call yourself fit, Artie,โ Hill cackled, hand gesturing down to where he had been sprawled out a moment earlier.ย
"Sorry to say it, but we all watched you wipe out. There's no wall there, it's just the banister," George snickered, pointing over his shoulder. Even from where you were lying, you could clearly see the rest of the group downstairs, all looking up from the first floor.
Arthur groaned, his head now in his hands.ย
โThat was hardly fair,โ he complained, looking up at the boys then to you.
โYou cheated.โ
That got a laugh out of you, a smile plastered on your face as you rose up onto your forearms.
โWhy would I even need to? You have the co-ordination of a newborn deer Artie boy, Iโm surprised you even made it up the stairs.โย
Isaac coughed a laugh, Arthur turned to glare at his best friend.
โYou did hit the wall pretty hard after tripping on the rug before the stairs,โ Isaac shrugged.ย
The re-telling made George and Hill laugh further, taking obvious enjoyment out of Arthur's misfortune.ย
โWhatever,โ Arthur huffed, pushing himself up and heading towards the boys crowded around the door. โI need to get my bags.โย
โOoh, grab mine too will ya?โ You sung out, beaming as he turned to level you with a scowl.
โItโs only right, you did lose.โ
โ *เฉโฉโงโห เณ
The chalet seemed to settle into a comfortable hum, by the time you'd unpacked the last of your clothes and wrestled your suitcase beneath the bed, the restless energy that had followed the group had faded into something softer, quiet voices drifting lazily through the timber walls instead of bouncing off them. Somewhere downstairs, laughter sounded before melting into the steady crackle of the fire in the stone hearth. Floorboards creaked under feet wandering room to room, exploring every corner of what would become home for the next two weeks.
You lingered for a moment before leaving the bedroom.
The upstairs landing wrapped around the open living area below, its polished timber railing overlooking a space that somehow felt both impossibly large and wonderfully cosy. Warm amber light spilled from iron light fixtures, catching the honey-coloured wood that covered almost every surface. Thick beams adorned the vaulted ceiling above, their age worn proudly into every knot and groove, while oversized windows framed the mountains beyond like paintings that changed every time another flurry of snow drifted past.
Plush sofas and worn armchairs gathered in the living room in a haphazard circle, each draped with knitted blankets and throws that looked almost too inviting to leave untouched. Scattered across the coffee table sat a collection of board games, half-burnt candles and dog-eared guidebooks left behind by previous guests.
Beyond the lounge, glass doors opened onto a wide balcony that overlooked the valley below. Snow fell in slow, lazy flakes, settling across the railings and the rooftops of neighbouring chalets until the entire village looked as though someone had wrapped it in cotton. The mountains rose beyond it all, impossibly still beneath the fading afternoon light. The view was every bit as breathtaking as you remembered. After months of planning, endless group chats and far too many spreadsheets, you were finally back.ย ย
The familiar smell hit you halfway down the stairs. Fresh pine. Woodsmoke. Cut with a chemically citrus scent coming from the kitchen where Liv had undoubtedly already started cleaning and unpacking groceries before anyone else had thought to.ย
You met her in the kitchen, a slow warmth seeping through your coat and down to your fingertips until they tingled.ย
โHey gorgeous,โ you cooed, taking a seat at the island and watching as she flowed gracefully, unpacking one bag, then tucking it and its contents away before starting on another.ย
โFeeling better?โ She asked, turning to face you with an eyebrow raised, smiling softly as if worried for your response.ย
You shrugged your shoulders, waving dismissively, grinning back to her.ย
โEh, itโs not ideal. I mean it is Arthurโฆโ You replied, letting your sentence trail off.ย
โBut, itโs not like weโre sharing a bed. Plus, I have you, Sab, the rest of the guys and enough of thisโ You said, quickly snatching a bottle from her overfull arms, rolling it between your palms to check the label, โto last us a few months probably.โ.ย
โYep, we got enough food and drinks sorted for us to host a village I think,โ she giggled, hand gesturing to the remaining bags and boxes covering the counters.ย
โI think you might both be underestimating these boys,โ said Sabina, entering the kitchen with a scoff.ย
She smiled brightly at you and Liv, taking the seat next to you and leaning her head on your shoulder wrapping an arm around yours.ย
โIโm so happy weโre all here together,โ she said after a beat, her voice soft and tinged with emotion. โI feel like itโs not long now until we wonโt have time to do these anymore.โย
You didnโt reply at first, letting Sabinaโs comment settle its way into the space between your ribcage and heart.ย
Liv turned to you both, palms pressed into the counter as she jokes, โCโmon Sab, itโs day one and youโre sober - donโt tell me youโre getting sappy already.โย
Sabina held up her hand, a bottle you hadnโt noticed gripped loosely, already half empty. โWho said I was sober?โ She returned, waving the bottle.ย
โGuess now is as good as any time,โ Liv contemplated, grabbing her own bottle and an opener, gesturing for you to hand yours to her to open too.ย
The sharp clink of glass and the satisfying hiss of a bottle cap giving way must have rung through the chalet like a dinner bell - before Liv had even handed your drink back, the kitchen was flooded with boys. The gentle hum that had settled over the house moments earlier vanished, replaced by laughter, overlapping conversations and the unmistakable buzz of excitement that always came with the first night of the trip.ย
They spilled over one another in a rush towards the drinks fridge, Chris and Hill predictably shoulder barging for first access while Josh protested loudly behind them. Liv laughed, hopping up onto the kitchen island to avoid being trampled as the rest crowded around the benches, each emerging moments later with a bottle or can in hand. Within minutes, everyone had gathered around the island, drinks raised and smiles stretching from ear to ear.ย
George cleared his throat dramatically, lifting his bottle into the centre of the group.ย โTo gunpowder and pussy, live by one, die by the other - love the smell of both.โย
A chorus of cheers sounded followed closely by the clinking of glass bottles. The chant didnโt fit the moment. Truthfully it rarely did - but you had all heard it so often that no one questioned it, it was as if it was the unofficial 10th member of the group.
โ *เฉโฉโงโห เณ
It took less than 10 minutes for Chris to end up on top of a table. And even less than that for Hill to join him, music blared through the speakers as the pair sang wildly off-key to a song they didnโt know the lyrics to.ย
The evening seemingly snowballed from there. One drink became two, two somehow became shots, and before long the dining table was lined with glasses, salt packets and lime wedges that were somehow more decorative than useful. You'd barely finished one round before Chris was sliding another shot into your hand with the insistence that this one was "for the holiday," as though the previous ones hadn't been.
At some point you found yourself refereeing a shotgunning competition between Arthur, George and Chris and although it hadnโt been George's idea he clearly had the upper-hand against his incredibly lightweight competitors.
Arthur lost spectacularly, wearing almost as much beer as he'd managed to swallow, Chris had the almost impressive inability to down a drink without any measurable speed and George, as expected, had won.ย Despite the loss that Arthur had drunkenly declared was a โbiased decisionโ he managed to crown himself "the People's Champion" before demanding a rematch, handing over more cans.
You weren't entirely sure when your first drink had turned into your seventh or eighth, only that every time your bottle was empty another mysteriously appeared in your hand. Somewhere between teasing Sabina over her choice of mixer and helping Liv rescue a bowl of chips from Chris' enthusiastic dancing, conversations splintered into smaller groups before weaving back together again. Every corner of the chalet buzzed with laughter.
Arthur drifted between them all, half listening, half having to focus on his ability to stand without swaying, but every now and then he'd catch your eye from across the room, lifting his bottle with an infuriatingly smug grin before promptly walking into someone else's shoulder, you made a point of applauding every near miss. He responded with an exaggerated bow that very nearly ended with him on the floor.
Outside, the mountains had disappeared behind a curtain of steadily falling snow. Frost had begun creeping across the corners of the balcony doors, the glass fogged by the warmth spilling from the chalet. Jackets and coats had long since been abandoned in untidy piles beside the fire, while empty bottles and discarded shot glasses gradually claimed more and more of the dining table with every passing hour. Somewhere beneath the music, the fire crackled contentedly, almost entirely drowned out by laughter that had grown louder with every drink.
It was impossible to determine when the line from pleasantly buzzed to objectively intoxicated had been crossed, but you were fairly certain it happened around the time Chris launched a deck of cards across the living room, half the deck scattering beneath the coffee table, three landed in the fireplace before Isaac rescued them, and one somehow found its way into George's drink.ย
Nobody seemed particularly concerned. If anything, the room erupted into even more laughter as Hill applauded the effort, Arthur insisted that "the cards were still playable," and George silently fished the soggy queen of hearts from his cup with a smirk.
โItโs time ladies and gents,โ Chris announced, spreading his arms dramatically. โTo ride the bus.โย
The chorus of cheers and laughter was quickly drowned out by an equally loud collection of groans.
"Oh, absolutely not," Liv laughed, sinking further into the sofa. "Last year's game ended with Hill making snow angels in his boxers."
"They were briefs," Hill corrected, holding up a finger.
"That is somehow worse."
Chris ignored them entirely, already dropping to his knees to gather the scattered deck. Arthur crouched beside him, making a valiant effort to help despite repeatedly trying to stack the cards upside down. George handed the damp queen of hearts back into the deck with little more than a shrug.
"Cโmon itโll be fun, I doubt the first night will get that hectic," George said, gesturing to where Arthur and Chris sat, eyes glassy.ย
"You've said that every year," Isaac replied.
"And every year weโve had fun,โ Hill cut in, his words slurred.
Satisfied with that logic, George took the cards from Chris and gave them a proper shuffle.
"The usual rules?" he asked, glancing around the room.
"The usual rules," Chris confirmed.
Liv sighed. "I hate your usual rules."
"You love our usual rules."
"I tolerate them."
"Because you always manage to come out unscathed," Josh pointed out.
"I donโt always."ย
"You've literally never ridden the bus." George reminded her, pointing the deck in her direction.
Liv opened her mouth to argue before pausing. "...That's actually a fair point."
"Sips for the first few rounds," he reminded everyone. "Wrong answer, you drink."
"And every round after that?" Hill asked, grinning far too enthusiastically. Chris' smile somehow widened.ย
"Weโll see."
George gathered the deck together once more, giving the cards a proper shuffle before settling back against the sofa. The room slowly rearranged itself around him, everyone abandoning their conversations to squeeze onto couches, armchairs and the floor. You found yourself perched cross-legged beside Sabina, your drink balanced on your knee while Arthur dropped onto the rug opposite you with Chris and Hill either side, all three wearing the same look of hazy confidence.
"The first round's easy," George reminded everyone, beginning to deal. "Red or black. Get it wrong, you drink. Get it right, we move on."
It should have been simple. It wasn't.
Within the first few rotations Josh had lost all of his fifty-fifty guesses, Chris was already accusing George of shuffling the deck "suspiciously," and Sabina had declared the cards biased after incorrectly calling red three times in a row. Opposite you, George and Isaac remained infuriatingly composed, barely hesitating before each answer while everyone else argued over probabilities that none of them actually understood.
You were surprisingly on a winning streak, however that soon came to an end with your first wrong guess. Calling higher on a 3 of clubs just to be hit with a 2 of spades. Your newly found misfortune earned you a chorus of cheers, Hill cupping his mouth to holler exaggeratedly and Arthur looked entirely too pleased with himself as he watched you take a drink.
"Oh, don't get too excited," you laughed, pointing across the circle. "Your turn's coming."
Arthur scoffed. "Difference is, I donโt lose."ย
You rolled your eyes and sank back into your seat, swigging again from your cup. George raised his eyebrows while looking at Arthur, prompting him to make his guess.ย
Arthur turned again to you and met your eyes. โWhat will it be, princess?โ He asked, a smug smile on his face.ย
You pursed your lips, looking up as if in thought. โRed.โย
Arthur faced George and tipped his head towards the deck, โBlack,โ he said, sending you a wink and a shrug.
George turned over the next card. Red. 6 of diamonds.
Chris doubled over laughing, Hill nearly fell off the sofa applauding the result, and even George shot him a grin as Arthur stared at the card in complete disbelief. Isaac turned into Liv's shoulder to hide his laughter at the eruption around the table.ย
โTough luck that,โ Josh said, patting Arthur on the back.
"No," Arthur said eventually, his eyes narrowed as he looked between you and George.
George blinked. "...No?"
"I reject that, you two cheated. You did that on purpose." He crossed his arms over his chest.
"You reject that?โ George responded.
โHow could we have cheated?" you asked, shocked at his accusation.
"I donโt know!" He threw his hands up, โYou twoโฆ Conspired!โ
"So, somehow we both knew youโd tell me to pick your next card, say the opposite of what I said and that the card would be red?" You said, disbelief laced in your tone.
"Yeah, good job partner in crime." George joked, winking animatedly to you.
You couldn't stop yourself laughing. Arthur pointed at you then George. "Whatever you are up to, enjoy it while it lasts."
โWe didnโt cheat Arthur, youโre just battered and a sore loser,โ George smiled, shaking his head then shifting his body toward Liv for her to take her turn.ย
The rest of the groups turns crawled by, every time you began to invest your limited attention you felt Arthur's eyes burning holes into you. Meeting his scornful gaze wasnโt much easier, each shift you made felt monitored as if you were a priceless artifact in a museum being supervised, except youโre drunk in a cabin and the dedicated โsecurity guardโ hates you.ย
Eventually Sabina and Liv sat themselves out, watching on occasion but beginning to tidy the room of cups and shot glasses.
When it came to your turn and George faced you, holding out the cards in front of him, Arthur broke his silence.ย
โIโll deal them this time,โ his eyes were still narrowed and he spoke through clenched teeth.ย
George handed him the deck, a smile played on his lips as he tilted his head watching as Arthur lazily reshuffled. โJust to be sure.โ Sabina and Liv giggled at seeing how serious Arthur was taking it, making their way into the kitchen and whispering loudly.
โMake your guess, princess,โ Arthur drawled.ย
โWow, and Iโm the dramatic one? I lost the last round too!โ You huffed, shrugging your shoulders.ย
As you lent forward to pull the top card, Arthurโs hand slapped on top of yours. โNuh uh,โ he said as you retracted your arm quickly, rubbing at the skin.ย
โYou donโt pull, you guess.โ He tutted.ย
โSafe hands, Artie. You smack me again and Iโll hit you back,โ you said, voice low.ย
A clamor of โoooohโs rang out.ย
Chris chiming in before adding โFirstly,โ he stammed, โheโs not wrong and you know how to play. And thirdly, Artiee boyy would probably like that.โ
You rolled your eyes, turning your attention back to Arthur and away from the blonde boy hiccuping and laughing to himself.ย
โRed,โ you answered.ย
Arthur grinned, making a grand gesture of flipping a card over and onto the coffee table. Black, of course.ย
You heard the remaining players cheer. As you took yet another drink from your cup you noticed a second card tucked behind the 8 of clubs, George seemed to notice it as well - his hand pointing to the table as he barked out, โand weโre the cheaters!? Look! That was two cards!โย
Everyone's attention turned to the table, Arthur quickly trying to scoop the cards up to hide them. โWhat? N - no it wasnโt.โ He stuttered, dropping those and a few other cards back onto the table in his clumsy haste.ย
โTotal sore loser,โ Josh laughed, smacking his knees as he rose to his feet. โWell, thatโs me done.โย
Joining Sabina at the bottom of the stairs, he looked back over at a now pink flushed Arthur, โI donโt want to play with a cheater.โ
Arthur pouted, his bottom lip jutting out as laughs from the rest of the group sounded.
Isaac looked at the time on his phone and followed Josh, meeting with Liv in the kitchen and hugging into her as they took the stairs together. โDo try to be quiet, idiots.โ He called out.
It left you with five players remaining, technically four as Hill half way through his own turn had fallen asleep, buried amongst pillows and throws. Arthur huffed as George took the deck and now turned to him, the blush in his neck and ears still prominent whether from the alcohol or being caught.ย
โIโm not mad,โ George started, a smirk on his lips as he continued, โIโm just disappointed, Artie. You call yourself a man of integrity.โ A โtskโ following.ย
โWhat do you know,โ Arthur mumbled, the words barely intelligible. โI am a man of in-ted-getty.โย ย
โIn-teg-ret-ty,โ you corrected him, sounding the word out to him mockingly.ย
โDonโt kick a man when heโs down,โ Chris fake whined, throwing an arm across Arthur's shoulder.ย
Appreciative of the defence, Arthur settled back into him. Unfortunately, Chris took the opportunity to turn his head, biting into Arthur's skin not hidden by his shirt sleeve. The action making him jump, a high pitched squeak leaving his mouth.ย
โNope, nope, Iโm done.โ Arthur muttered, pushing up off the table to stand to his feet and dusting off the front of his jeans, taking a step back to watch Chris as he rocks forward, laughing.
โOh cโmon,โ George said, patting the spot where Arthur had just been sat. โWeโre still playing.โย
โNope, Iโm not.โ Arthur said, irritation evident in his clipped tone.ย
He turned to walk up the stairs. โYou four better clean this up,โ he called over his shoulder, gesturing towards the living room. A few throw blankets lay haphazardly around the space, while a handful of cups remained scattered across the tables. Thanks to Liv and Sabinaโs cleaning efforts, however, it was at least relatively tidy again.
George turned to you and smiled, rolling his eyes at Arthur. You smiled back, laughing lightly at the scene.ย
โDonโt know why youโre laughing,โ Chris said, sending himself back into a fit of giggles.ย
You joined him, although you weren't entirely sure what he was laughing at. โWhy?โ You asked, still laughing.
โBe - because,โ he tried. Then he stopped, interrupted by his bubbling laughter. โBecause-โ He dissolved into laughter again.
โBecause.โ Hill said groggily, fighting consciousness. โYou,โ he pointed in your direction sluggishly, โyou are sharing a room with himโ he gestured up to the landing, โwith Mr Tantrum Pants.โ He finally finished.ย
Chris, Hill and George all burst into laughter. Their laughter only increasing at the now-deadpan look on your face as you looked between the three of them and the now-closed door to your room.
โFuckโs sake.โ
โ *เฉโฉโงโห เณ
You took your time getting ready for bed, between the exhaustion creeping in and the alcohol refusing the leave, your movements and co-ordination were definitely less than accurate.ย
You managed a shower, though opting to use what you hoped was someone from your group's body wash as yours remained unpacked and untouched a little too far from your reach under the sink. Then came brushing your teeth, which had taken significantly more time than usual, having to restart each time you forgot what tooth youโd gotten up to. Brushing your hair had been the easiest so far, luckily for you it had been out of your face all day so not a complete mess.ย
After scouring the bathroom for panadol and washing two down with enough water to fill the downstairs livingroom, you had worked up the nerve to head towards your room, or, more accurately, eventually gotten so tired that your need for sleep had finally outweighed your reluctance to share a room with Arthur.
You waited until the bathroom door had been closed for several seconds before finally creeping into your room. It was dark, the only light coming from the hallway behind you. You paused just inside the doorway, listening.
No movement. No snoring. No irritatingly smug voice from the other side of the room. Perfect. You closed the door as quietly as you could and took one careful step towards your bed.
โFinally.โ A low voice from the dark sounded.
You jumped, before hissing โJesus Christ, Artie, are you trying to give me a heart attack?โ
โBit dramatic,โ Arthur mumbled from somewhere in the darkness.
You turned towards him, just able to make out the shape of him sprawled across his bed. โYouโre awake?โ
โObviously.โ
โYou were supposed to be asleep.โ
โI was asleep.โ He shifted, the mattress creaking beneath him. โThen you came up.โ
โIโve barely taken a step in the room.โ
โNot likeโin here,โ he mumbled. โUpstairs. You took ages.โ
โI was showering.โ
โFor a reeeally long time.โ
You stared at the unmoving lump through the darkness.
He sighed, deeply and dramatically, as though you had personally offended him. โYou were avoidinโ me.โ
โGod, who's the princess now,โ you said under your breath - knowing heโd likely heard it anyway.ย โArtie, I was not avoiding you.โ
He huffed, shifting back over.ย
โGo to sleep.โ You said.
He let out another wounded sigh and rolled onto his side. โYouโre beinโ very rude.โ
โI'm rude?โ
โNo.โ He corrected you as though the difference was important. โYouโreโฆ youโre be-ing rude.โ
โBecause I took my time getting ready for bed?โ
โExactly.โ
You stared at the back of his head. โGoodnight, Arthur.โ
โGoodnight,โ he muttered, still sounding deeply offended. Then, after a moment, he added, โYou coulda justโฆ come to bed.โ
โI know.โ
โYou didโn though and now itโsโฆ stupid oโclock and you woken me up.โ
โItโs 2am. And I apologise.โ You stressed the last word, ready to be done with this conversation. Silence followed, allowing you to make it to your bed in peace.
โCan I tell you somethinโ,โ he slurred, not waiting for an answer as he continued, โI waddโn asleep. Likeโbefore, I waited for you.โย
You werenโt sure if he was still drunk or if his whispering obstructed his speech.ย โOh and I didโn cheat, I just didโnโฆ seeโฆ the other card.โย
You pulled the covers back and moved around some of the pillows to make yourself space.ย
โYeah yeah, I know.โ You said, hoping compliance would placate him enough.
He paused. โYou took ages cominโ to bed.โ Another pause. โBit weird.โ
You climbed into your bed and pulled the covers over yourself. โArtie. Go. To. Sleep.โ
โFine.โ He was quiet for approximately three seconds. โNighty night, princess.โ
โFuck off.โ
Arthur gave a quiet, satisfied laugh from across the room, as though your response had somehow proven whatever point he had been trying to make.

Thereโs a very particular feeling that comes along with shutting your laptop for the final time before a holiday. Itโs not a dramatic, life-changing kind of relief. Itโs softer. A release that settles somewhere between your shoulders after answering the last email, setting the out-of-office and finally accepting that any disaster that unfolds while youโre away will have to wait its turn.ย
For the first time in what felt like months, nobody needed anything from you, you were at peace, finally enjoying the sweet serenity of โ your phone buzzed.ย
