到底

到底 is a fun little grammar pattern that implies the tone of “what/who one earth” when asking a question. You can use 到底 with 不 or 沒, but it can’t be used with 嗎（吗）.

This is a really simple grammar considering that all you need to do is throw 到底 into a question.

The structure is as follows:

subject+到底+question

So, for example, if someone said “我不會吸地，不會打掃，也不會洗衣服。（我不会吸地，不会打扫，也不会洗衣服。）”  you might respond with “你到底會什麼家務？（你到底会什么家务？）”

Other examples of 到底:

到底怎麼走？（到底怎么走？）How on earth do we get there?

你明天到底去不去看哪部電影？（你明天到底去不去看哪部电影？）Are you going to watch that movie tomorrow or not?

Japanese Vocabulary

Taken from iknow.jp (I signed up for trial lessons today) It’s a great language learning tool. It’s isn’t free, but it’s cheap, so you can be sure money is well spent. iknow.jp has a series of lessons containing the most commonly used Japanese words. (I actually learned about this site through this video of Regan the Vegan.)

Here are the words from my first lesson:

1) 大変 「たいへん」awful, hard

Part of Speech: adjectival noun

Sample Sentence:

大変なことが起こりました。 たいへんな こと が おこりました。 A terrible thing happened.

2) 簡単 「かんたん」 simple, easy

Part of Speech: adjectival noun

Sample Sentences:

この料理はとても簡単です。 この りょうり は とても かんたん です。 The dish is very easy to make.

このゲームのルールは簡単です。 The rules of this game are easy.

3) 似ている 「にている」 look like, resemble

Part of Speech: verb

Sample Sentence:

私は母に似ています。 わたし は はは に にて います。 I resemble my mother.

4) 驚く 「おどろく」 be surprised, be startled

Part of Speech: verb

Sample Sentences:

風の強さに驚きました。 かぜ の つよさ に おどろきました。 I was surprised by the strong wind.

彼は血を見て驚いた。 かれ は ち を みて おどろいた。 He was surprised when he saw the blood.

5) 嫌 「いや」 dislike, don't like

Part of Speech: adjectival noun

Sample Sentence:

私は待つのが嫌だ。 わたし は まつ の が いや だ。 I don’t like to wait.

6) 喧嘩 「けんか」　fight, argument

Part of Speech: verbal noun

Sample Sentences:

喧嘩はやめて。 けんか は やめて。 Stop fighting.

妹とひどい喧嘩をした。 いもうと と ひどい けんか を した。 I had an awful fight with my sister.

7) なるほど I see, now I understand

Part of Speech: adverb

Sample Sentence:

なるほど、よく分かりました。 なるほど、よく わかりました。 I see—Now, I understand well.

8) つまり in short, that is to say

Part of Speech: adverb

Sample Sentence:

つまり、あなたは何も知らないのですね。 つまり、あなた は なに も しらない の です ね。 So, in short, you don't know anything.

9) そのまま as it is, just like that

Part of Speech: adverb

Sample Sentence:

そのままお待ちください。 そのまま おまち ください。 Please hold on.

10) はっきり clearly

So spricht der Herr: »Kommt, wir wollen miteinander verhandeln, wer von uns im Recht ist, ihr oder ich. Selbst wenn eure Sünden blutrot sind, sollt ihr doch schneeweiß werden. A word that stresses/emphasises something in a sentence or reflects the attitude a speaker is trying to convey. They are scarce in English (and various other languages), but to give an example take a look at ‘then’ in this sense:

“So how old are you then?”

If one was saying this to a child it could be seen as making the overall tone of the question more endearing and curious, not blunt.

German Modal Particle - Jedenfalls

#1 - Stresses why sth should be the case or not as bad as it seems (”at least”).

Ex: Vielleicht seid ihr krank, ihr seht jedenfalls schlecht aus. Perhaps you’re all ill, at least you all don’t look well.

#2 - In commands it corresponds to ‘anyhow’ or ‘in any case’.

Ex: Bring jedenfalls deinen Badeanzug mit! Bring your bathing suit along anyhow!

Chinese Grammar: Comparisons

My first grammar post! I hope there will be more to come. =}

Here are ways to compare things whether they be the same, or different, and also how something has improved/changed.

比 - bǐ: to compare/something is more ___ than something

我弟弟比我高。/ 我弟弟的个子比我的高。 (Wŏ dìdi bĭ wŏ gāo. / Wŏ dìdi de gèzi bĭ wŏ de gāo.) - My little brother is taller than me./ My little brother’s height is taller than mine.

我不比她高。 (Wŏ bùbĭ tā gāo.) - I am not taller than her.

…跟… 一样 - …gēn… yiyang: the same; as… as…

这本书跟那本一样长。(Zhè běn shū gēn nà běn yīyàng cháng.) - This book and that one are both long.

这个故事跟那个不一样好笑。 (Zhè ge gùshi gēn nà ge bù yīyàng hăo xiào.) - This story is not as funny as that one.

越来越 - yue lai yue: more and more

他的个子越来越高。 (Tā de gèzi yuè lái yuè gāo.) - His height gets more and more tall.

Now, with these types of comparisons, you never add 很 (hěn) before the adjective. Usually to really add depth or exaggeration to just how something is much more than something else, add 多了(duō le) after the adjective.

e.g： 他比我高多了。 (Tā bĭ wŏ gāo duō le.) - He’s much taller than me.

Jesaja 1:1-17 HFA

In diesem Buch sind die Botschaften Jesajas aufgeschrieben, der ein Sohn von Amoz war. Während der Regierungszeit der judäischen Könige Usija, Jotam, Ahas und Hiskia offenbarte ihm Gott, was mit Juda und seiner Hauptstadt Jerusalem geschehen würde.

Himmel und Erde rufe ich als Zeugen an! Hört gut zu, was der Herr sagt: »Die Kinder, die ich großgezogen und ernährt habe, wollen nichts mehr von mir wissen. Jeder Ochse kennt seinen Besitzer, und jeder Esel weiß, wo die Futterkrippe seines Herrn steht. Was aber macht mein Volk Israel? Sie haben vergessen, wem sie gehören, und sie wollen es auch gar nicht mehr wissen!«

Wehe euch, ihr abtrünniges Volk! Wie viel Schuld habt ihr auf euch geladen! Eine Bande von Übeltätern seid ihr, durch und durch verdorben. Ihr habt den Herrn verlassen. Voller Verachtung habt ihr dem heiligen Gott Israels den Rücken gekehrt. Seid ihr noch nicht genug bestraft? Müsst ihr euch immer weiter von Gott entfernen? Ihr seid doch schon an Leib und Seele krank! Von Kopf bis Fuß seid ihr voller Beulen, blutiger Striemen und frischer Wunden. Nichts mehr an euch ist gesund, und keiner ist da, der eure Wunden reinigt, mit Salbe behandelt und verbindet. Euer Land liegt in Trümmern: Die Städte sind verbrannt; ihr müsst zusehen, wie sich Fremde über eure Ernte hermachen, und wenn sie abziehen, sind die Äcker verwüstet!

Nur Zion ist übrig geblieben, verloren wie eine Stadt, die von Feinden eingeschlossen ist. Einsam steht sie da wie ein Wächterhäuschen im Weinberg, wie eine Hütte im Gurkenfeld. Hätte der Herr, der allmächtige Gott, nicht einen kleinen Rest von uns gerettet, dann wären wir alle umgekommen wie damals die Leute von Sodom und Gomorra.

Ihr Führer des Volkes gleicht den Fürsten von Sodom. Hört, was der Herr euch zu sagen hat! Und ihr vom Volk seid wie die Einwohner von Gomorra; achtet genau auf die Weisung unseres Gottes! Der Herr fragt: »Was soll ich mit euren vielen Opfern anfangen? Ich habe genug von euren Schafböcken und dem Fett eurer Mastkälber; das Blut eurer Opfertiere ist mir zuwider, sei es von Stieren, Ziegenböcken oder Lämmern. Ihr kommt zum Tempel und wollt dort in meine Gegenwart treten. Doch in Wirklichkeit zertrampelt ihr nur meinen Vorhof. Hat irgendjemand das von euch verlangt? Hört endlich mit diesen nutzlosen Opfern auf! Ich kann euren Weihrauch nicht mehr riechen. Ihr feiert bei Neumond und am Sabbat, ihr kommt zu den Gottesdiensten und den jährlichen Festen zusammen, aber ich verabscheue sie, weil ihr an euren Sünden festhaltet.
