Planning is an essential part of language revitalization. Surveys, sometimes required by funding sources, are a tool for planning. Far beyond recording language status, surveys help us understand community vitality – how people are using and want to use their languages and attitudes that can propel or hinder revitalization efforts. This folder contains examples of different kinds of surveys from around the world. In addition, there is some helpful material for developing, analyzing, and reporting on survey data. The contents were gathered by Keren Rice and Mary Linn over several years for their Community Language Survey workshops taught at the Institute for Collaborative Language Research (CoLang) in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 (Rice and Ozbolt), and 2018. The slides are taken from their TalkStory on community surveys at ICLDC 2017 and used in their 2018 CoLang workshop. All of the surveys and reports provided here are open access or given with permission to share.
